Anti-Vir Free/Pay Editions Updated!

works great. changes my whole perception of AV programs. ( i am used to dealing w mcafee at my work pc, and i used to work at tech support for my school where mcafee was hell to deal with also )

Avira from alternate websites is like a 30 day free before the constant nag to buy, more than the normal daily nag screen. There is always one on their own website deeply buried somewhere. The advantage is it never reverts to the constant nag, just the daily. And for the daily nag you can deny execution rights to the system for the avgnotify.dll file to disable it.

Is 9.0 less resource intensive? That would be the only reason I want to upgrade. I sometimes get choppy TV via WMC and I think i might be due to the Anti-Vir running in the background.

I don't get it, shouldn't it autoupdate to the new version the way it auto updates definitions?

Some people may not want to migrate to a new version, but still want updated definitions. It would be nice if they notified you of an updated core though.

I believe it does. At least that's how I was notified of it. A small slide-up window comes up that asks you if you would like to upgrade to 9.0. It sends you to the download page. The new installer file will uninstall the previous version automatically.

Maybe I'm not patient enough :^D

I've always found out on the web, and updated before I was given notification.

I updated it last night. Haven't seen the nag screen during updates (yet) .. I would say try the V8 silence method and see if it does the job.
Probably will

the path is different with v9 from what I had earlier, but otherwise those instructions seem to still work great.
The day they stop working is the day I stop using Avira, it's just too intrusive otherwise.

I also add /nosplash in the registry key that starts it when windows boot

You are correct .. the path for V9 is: C:\Program Files\Avira\Antivir Desktop\Avnotify.exe

The site that I got the data from apparently has not yet been updated with the new directory
location, but the instructions still apply and do work
