What the heck happened here?

A "Safety volunteer" decides to shoot a guy who turned up carrying a rifle (for unknown reasons), and manages to kill an uninvolved protestor? An example of how "a good guy with a gun" doesn't always go as planned?

The idiocy of this country. Why are guns allowed at protests? If you feel unsafe stay home. Just as stupid as allowing guns in bars. What could possibly go wrong.

Even in the Wild West you checked your gun at the door

The scuttlebutt I've been aware of claims that the one carrying a rifle is known to some of the local protesting community and that he's done so in the past and is generally part of the protesting community, and also refutes the notion that he pointed the rifle at anyone. All hearsay, of course, maybe some video will materialize.
Yes, they were all asked not to be armed, but given the rising violence from fascists I can't say I'm too shocked some folks opt to remained armed (nor shocked that it's led to the death of someone essentially uninvolved).

Have to say it leaves me very confused as to what I think about it. Too used to a situation where even those who hate each other's guts and who are on complete opposite ends of a political spectrum take it as a given that the most they'll do is punch each other or _maybe_ try and stab each other.

In the wild west guns were mostly banned in towns. The infamous gunfight at the O.K. Corral was over a group of known outlaws refused to hand over their guns to Virgil Earp when they entered the town of Tombstone.
