100% yes. Before LASIK I always had anti-reflective coatings, including on my prescription sunglasses. After LASIK, while I was waiting for my non-prescription sunglass lenses to come in (special order with anti-reflective and mirror coating) I had to live with the super cheap-o sunglasses I got from the LASIK doc. Which did not have an anti-reflective coating. Holy mackerel, how do people live without them!? It makes the biggest difference when outdoors. The light bouncing off your face will reflect off your glasses and into your eye. Significantly obscuring your view.

Glasses are a multi-year investment. And you wear them ALL DAY. Lenses and coatings are not something you skimp on.

I'm still on my first pair of glasses which have the coating. I tried on my relatives glasses without the coating and could not stand the glare in my eyes. I also can't stand glossy photos, tv or monitor screens that aren't coated or shiny and mobile screen protectors that are glossy.

When I had glasses I found no matter what coating I got it never really seemed to work, I'd always end up with reflections if there was a light source behind me and it was so annoying. It was a couple hundred bucks every time I wanted to try a different one too, and they don't keep the old lenses so if you want to go back to what you had before you have to pay again. I spent at least a thousand dollars trying to find the perfect lens and I never did.

Ended up getting LASIK. Best money I ever spent. I was chicken at first about going through it but the idea of not needing glasses made it worth it.

What? didn't you pay for them? They stole your old lenses? Prosecute them!

Yeah I found it stupid that it worked that way. If I paid for them they should at least let me just keep them and I can bring them back if I want them installed again. But it was some weird policy where they had to send it back to the company that makes them.

Core charge on lenses? I don't think so. Lawsuit time!

(At least in the US, if you paid for them, they are yours!)

So, in Canada, you essentially rent your eyeglasses? I just thought the system was broken here in the States....

He lives in a smaller town, maybe they were the only store there? It's an interesting policy, and one that seems to insurance the money flows...not surprising since Canada is economically inferior to the U.S in many places outside of their Metros.

Apparently, vision and dental are not "upgrades" from the American system in Canada. Or at least the provincial health care plans don't include it. Maybe other programs exist for certain low income folks, but that's not much different still.

USA is very much a "by each state" thing. Some states give their low income folks eligible for Medicaid nice vision and dental. Others don't unless someone literally dies, such as Maryland(which is a Democrat monopoly in its most important counties). Some states don't offer benefits but the MCO you pick for Medicaid does.

Unfortunately eye care, dental and a few other things are not covered by our universal healthcare, so as far as those go it's basically like being on the American system. Basically need to rely on your job to cover those costs, but even then my job barely covers glasses. I think they only cover up to like $85 or something. New glasses are normally more like $400. They did not cover LASIK either but that I can kinda understand, since it's an elective surgery.
