Anti-rape device

Text

A controversial South African invention, a female condom-like anti-rape device, is almost ready to hit the market after months of waiting for patent verification.

The device, known as Rapex, has stirred controversy around the world but its inventor, Sonnet Ehlers, is preparing the final pre-production phase after seven years of waiting.

The controversy has raged over whether the device, which has fish-like teeth that attach to the head and shaft of the penis, is a medieval device built on a hatred of men or whether it is an easy-to-use invention that could free millions of South African women from fear of rape.

The surprise factor will give women a chance to escape," says Ehlers, explaining that the rapist would be in great pain as the 25 teeth attach themselves to the shaft of the penis.

Nice idea, but if I were a rapist, I think in a fit of painful rage I'd be more likely to kill her.

The rapist also has to contend with the fact that only a doctor can remove the fish-like teeth.

This is the deterrant. Especially if the government starts using cases for anti-rape lawsuits. Getting one of these appointments would be a pretty good mark of a rapist.

its sad when things have to come down to this :

Though sadly, especially in South Africa, it appears to have.

My brother-in-law is moving his family back from Cape Town after 3 years there - the political/crime situation is rapidly deteriorating.

Any woman that would do that wouldn't be married for long.

i'm just saying i can see where this can be used maliciously.

i don't understand.

if a guy has enough power to be able to get a woman in position to rape her, chances are he can also get this device off of her before he rapes her.

I agree, although I wouldn't put it in the context you used. I understand you mean "If you were a rapist..." but any way - this could definetely just make things worse for the women.

Not only that but I find this stupid as a whole. Obviously rapists will be looking for this when they are committing the crime - and can probably simply pull it out the same way the women would at the end of the day. Its like DRM in the media age, only the ignorant and downright naive will be affected by it. I'm sure rapists read the news too

And a guy can't use his equipment maliciously? 😉

It is sad that they have to go to these lengths, but out of the maybe 1 case out of 1000 where it is used in such a manner, many more case of rape would be deterred. Just the thought that a girl may have that, may deter some pricks from doing bad things.

I was just a touch too late in making the same point

I dont think using it maliciously is what the problem will be. The problem is that the guy is just gonna kill the woman when it happens. In south africa, you dont get mugged. You get killed and then mugged. The crime is out of control there. In the long run it will probably deter rape, but in the short term, alot of woman are gonna get murdered rather than raped when this happens.
