"Antichrist" takes place almost entirely in a remote wooded setting full of tall trees, the better to go out on a limb. Charlotte Gainsbourgh and Willem Dafoe, a formerly loving couple afflicted by bottomless, entirely justified, grief, throw themselves into a form of self-prescribed couples therapy such as that dispensed in the environs of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Throw in some talking animals, literally stunning visuals and Mother Nature's most devilish tricks and what's not to like?

It's a Lars Von Trier (sp?) movie, so I wouldn't expect anything less than outlandish and provocative. I'll probably see it if it ever gets shown around here.

SPOILARS (like anybody's going to see the movie)!

So far, no review has gone into gruesome details, though, from what we gather, here's how it goes down, more or less: After knocking him unconscious, Gainsbourg bores a hole in Dafoe's leg with a hand drill and bolts him to a grindstone to keep him from escaping. Then, she smashes his scrotum with some sort of blunt object (the moment of impact happens slightly below the frame). We don't actually see his testicles become disengaged from this body, though it's apparently implied. Next, she brings him to a climax with her hands and he ejaculates blood (yes, it's shown). But that's not all! Later, in an extreme closeup ? lensed by Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle! ? Gainsbourg cuts off her own clitoris with a pair of scissors.

Hmm with everything on the internet, shock movies have to work pretty hard to get the desired effect.

I was about to say I'm down to see this movie.. but Jesus .. even that might be a bit much. Not that I couldn't stomach it, but I don't know if I necessarily desire to see it either.

Honestly, I don't understand why ANYONE would want to watch shit like this. Even mainstream "shock" movies like Saw and Hostel and stuff just make me 😕

I saw it at the film festival last year:

Antichrist - 7/10: Lars von Trier's new and I guess controversial movie. I actually ended up liking this more than I thought I would and really, if you don't think about it too much, it's basically just a horror film with some art house elements mingled in. There are many very obvious religious references throughout, but putting those aside, you are left with a decent horror film and an interesting view of grief and how two different people deal with it. I've heard this compared to The Shining and I definitely agree (that's a good thing); great atmosphere throughout and some cool cinematography and direction.

why would you want to see this junk?

The same people would watch this that go to football, baseball and basketball games. All while eating cold hot dogs and drinking hot beer. Start back up the gladiator style games, and they would be there too, even with their kids in tow.
