Anti-California attitude?

I guess maybe in being from California, I'm always confused why everyone is so anti-California or pro-california-criticism. I've always found it to be a beautiful state full of diversity of all types. I'm not against or for any other specific state or country, but I'm confused as to why California seems to get such a reputation.

The only other states I've heard similar things about are New Jersey (where I am now, and for the next month and a half) and Texas. Can anyone shed some light onto the US anti-california xenophobia I've found in other states? Is it simply a form of social solidarity (if it's not us, it's bad)? Is it a jealousy for CA's strength of economy? Let's hear some thoughts!

It is the clever grunts who keep bragging about California that turn off the other people.

The highly subtle macho men of Texas are one of the reasons why people say stuff about that state. Same with NY and NJ.

I'm glad to be from the Carolinas. 🙂

they're just jealous 😛.

hehe jk. People just love to group with their own kind, and find ways to find their own group to be better than others. It just comes naturally within all of us.

btw-
 for the Carolinas. I love that place. Asheville is kinda like my second home.

Smoggy in parts (LA) and largely filled with pretentious materialists who cheapen American culture while trying to feign a care for issues as well as a knowledge (Hollywood)

Hollywood. If it didn't exist, I wouldn't bash on Cali so much. But it's that one bad apple that gives the rest of the state a bad name for me. Oh, and San Francisco and Berkley are the other two bad apples.

yes.

well, I think San Diego is the "True" California 😛. hehe jk.. wait no jk.

There's some really nice places in the northern areas as well (Shasta area, etc)

I live here. I want to leave. But I like anything north of Redding and anything in the sierra nevadas or the eastern side of the sierras.

Boy, you know about California.

Mostly, people seem to hate california because we have alot of people with liberal beleifs here, and it pisses certain conservatives off that other people don't share thier opinions.

Yes. Nuke Berkeley. I hate that town. And get rid of Oakland.

San Fran can stay - it's mostly alright.

Probably the following stereotypes:

1) It's seen as liberal - tax the rich, give to the poor.
2) Hollywood image - liberal, vanity-minded actors (even though the vast majority of the 34 million residents have nothing to do with Hollywood.)
3)High cost of living

I'm sure a lot of it is envy. I've been in the state for a over a year and it's great place to live. Beats the hell out of suffering through winter.

jealousy

yes, everyone is jealous of our >=8.25% sales tax, 9.3% state income tax, traffic, illegal immigration, etc...

no really though the only thing that keeps me here is family and weather.

I moved out of CA 7 years ago, up to Alaska where I am now. I lived in CA for 20 years. I have to say, I will NEVER EVER EVER live there again! At least not SoCal. Blech.

When I left CA, I travelled to many over states before settling in AK. One thing I learned is that Californians think they're the sh!t, while the other 49 states think Californian's are asshats. CA really should be a separate country, it seems. It is incredibly diverse and marches to the beat of its own drummer... but it's also full of stuck-up, snobbish, pretentious, materialistic know-nothings who think they control the world.

As far as Texas, I lived there too for a while and it seemed like everyone there was a wannabe toughguy crossbred with a redneck. Even into the bigger cities, that "quality" was evident on occasion. They're just bitter, I think, because they only have the second largest state.

We don't have winter. Yet another reason I want to leave. I like having 4 seasons, thank you very much.
