Anthrax Cure distributed computing

There are already a couple labs with promising in-vivo Anthrax cures in the works, I would guess their funding has increased dramatically in the last several months. I would venture that a smallpox cure and some of the other more significant bio-agent threats should be targeted vs one that already has substantial agribusiness support, after all it is mostly a livestock disease.

Team AnandTech is currently involved in a similar project run by Sengent called D2OL. They are currently researching Anthrax, Smallpox, and Ebola. TA is currently 6th in the stats and we should move up to 5th in the next day or so.

More info and the ability to join TA's D2OL is found here:

Maggotry,
I thought many antibiotics would cure anthrax. 😕
Maybe they are looking for something that would help in the latter stages of the disease.

The following quotes are from a news release at www.sengent.com

<< "The realistic threat of biological weapons and bio-terrorism increases the urgency in advancing structure based drug design technology. Bacterial pathogens selected or bred as biological weapons kill in different ways and range from bacterial strains designed in a laboratory that are resistant to known antibiotics, to fatal toxin producing diseases. These pathogens can bind to human cells and inject a life-threatening toxin. Since most antibiotics are designed to kill the pathogens and not the toxin, they are completely ineffective once the individual has been exposed to the bacteria," explains Doug Nassaur, Sengent Chief Operating Officer. >>

<< "Even if it is too late to prevent the bacteria from spreading though the victims body and producing the toxin, a small molecule drug can neutralize the toxin similar to neutralizing the effects resulting from a snake bite," Nassaur further explains. Although the antitoxin strategy does not apply to all bacterial pathogens, its existence combined with efforts to "weaponize" pathogens against existing antibiotics, increase the sense of urgency in advancing the technology for rapid drug discovery. >>

I'm not sure if Sengent is using a different approach than the new Intel/UD project.

i think this project is awesome... antrhax is very much something immediate and serves a very direct purpose... i strongly encourage every anandtech'er to join this right now!

god bless america

Aids and Ebola are a tad more of an issue then antrax IMO 😉 we have cures for antrax if its caught early, ya it would be nice to beable to treat the later stages tho 🙂. BTW good find.

United Devices (cancer research) is also doing an Anthrax Project right now. www.ud.com

*Edit - heh, heh, didn't actually look at the original links......same project 🙂

I've been on the UD Cancer project since July but noticed that my clients are now working on a UD Anthrax project. I wonder if the Cancer project is finished or they are going to send us mixed project batches.

Mithrandir, I just switched back to ud and the cancer project is still going. You can select which project you want to work on if you go to your device settings online. The Anthrax project is set to run for "could be 3 weeks, could be 6 months" according to the site. They have a set amount of work they want done on it.

The only thing I don't like about the anthrax project is that it takes so damn long to do a work unit!

Oh yeah! I have noticed that too.... my 250 mmx looks like it will take about 230 hours or so.... and, it takes my tbird 1.33 about 36 hours for each one, it's insane!
