Why are you connecting to an access point that you do not own/operate or have authority to use? If you do have permission then any directional antenna will work fine, the first link in your post being better.

I have access to it, it's from my university.

Do you have clear line of sight?

I got one building in front of me, then it's all clear.

If the building is directly in your line of site you are probably SOL. 400 meters is really pushing it unless you use directional antennas, and only if you have direct line of site.

Given the distance and No clear line of sight!

Nah, I do not think it would work regardless of the Antenna used.

thanks anyway! :)

Nothing about wireless can be truly predicted until you try it out. Get a direction antenna and try. Might work, might not. Leaning on the probably not.

I'm with spidey on this one. Nothing is definite with wireless unless you try it. I've seen one situation where they had to go across a long parking lot and I could have sworn it wouldn't work...6 years later, it's still working. On the opposite side, Distance wasn't a problem and there was ONE wall, couldn't get wireless at all through it, had to run CAT5e around it and put in another AP. Get the equipment from a place with a good return policy and give it a shot. If it works, good for you. If not, return it.

Well I can envision situation where it can work.

Example: If the University source is an Antenna on the outside of the building and the Access point is a High Power Access Point (I.e. the over 100mW type) then a good Antenna might scope signal that might be functional..

But if it is a regular Access Point inside the building!!!

I personally have few Antennae or and I do not shy of spending money on Gizmos that sooner or later I would need any way, so I probably would try.

But to give it as a sound advice and tell some else to go and spend is good money in such a remote probability? Nah

In any case in order to try people do not need advice from others they can just try.

So why many people ask (the following is in general and not intendment directly at the OP coz I do not really know him)?

It is all about Self Psychology.

If you try without asking you blame yourself and feel like a fool.

If you try because out of few people one tells you that it worthwhile to try, you can share blame if it does not work.

I have no problem with him bringing it up on the forum.. lets people think of new ways to try things out and shows other what else is out there. Even if it does not work plenty of people will find that out too or give ideas to improve
