Antec's TruePower

Hi AntecCSR, can you remark at all on the typical turnaround time before AMD gets around to testing power supplies and adding them to the recommended list?

On a separate note, I think I figured out why my Antec DataChute PCI crashes my computers... it doesn't like USB mice. If I plug my USB Intellimouse into the PS/2 port using an adapter, the computer no longer crashes when I try to use the Datachute PCI. Am I getting warm? This problem occurs with both Win98 and Win2k, on both Intel/VIA and AMD/SiS735 systems, and yes, I'm following the directions and have read Antec's site for help.

Also it would be appreciated if Antec would make the Datachute PCI installation program available for download, since I can't find that silly floppy disk at the moment. Pleeeeeeze? 😉

How about an SX series case (or similar) that isn't so deep? My space requires no more than 17" depth else there's no room for me. 😉

Most cases are just too deep for me. 🙂
 
I don't know the CFM or dBA ratings for the power supplies. And if I did have numbers I'd be suspicious of them unless I also had the testing environment info (ie what's the point of giving the cfm/dba of the fan by itself? my opinion of course).

Depth of cases I'm not sure there's a lot we can do about right now. Even our older lines were about 16.5" to 18" deep.

We're shipping this week, so it'll take awhile to get to retailers.

AMD is changing how they deal with power supplies and compatibility. I'm not sure when that change will be reflected on their site, nor even how much I can say on that at this point. Typically speaking it used to take about a month, but with the changes they have in mind they haven't posted any of our newer power supplies at all (I do know that the PP412X had no problems though).

I wanted to know dBA rating of the TruePower because I wanted to compare that figure with the very quiet Zalman power supply (23dBA on their website). My current Antec 300Watt power supply is very loud and I wanna replace it. 🙂
 
Since the Antec PSU's are using variable-speed fans (or variable-voltage power to the fans), they'll have variable noise level. If AntecCSR can peek into the PSU and tell us the brand and model of the fans (Adda maybe?) we can probably track down the full-speed/worst-case airflow/noise ratings as reported by the fan manufacturer.

I got my TruePower 480 in the mail yesterday, I'll put it in my system later today but here's what I can find out about the fans:

92mm fan: All it say's on it is "Dynaeon Ball Bearing". It's clear-bladed and has 7 blades.

80mm fan: "Dynaeon Industrial Co, Ltd, Top Motor, Ball Bearing, Made in China" Model # is "DF1208BA". It says DC12V, 0.20A. It's black and has 7 blades.

I'll post back later, after I get it installed.
 
My TruePower 480 has been in my system for about 14 hrs now and here's my preliminary report:

1) It's super-quiet compared to the Enermax EG465P-VE that I've been using. Loudest thing in my system now are my Maxtor D740X HDDs.

2) The PSU fan speed does vary as the temps go higher but it just barely raises the noise level. The PSU fan RPM runs at 1465 RPM at idle and climbed to a max of 1670 RPM after running Prime95 for 13 hrs.

3) I have 3 of my Panaflo 80mm L1A's (case fans) plugged into the variable fan speed connectors. They are noticably quieter, and they start real slow on bootup. They must be running near 7volts at the low end, because you can actually see the blades turning slower. They never seem to get any noisier after running under load so I don't know if they're speeding up or not (no rpm monitoring of Panaflos).

4) Voltage (according toBIOS/Asus Probe). This will be Enermax vs. Antec:

At idle: 12v= 11.904/11.84, 5v= 5.08/4.919, 3.3v= 3.328/3.25, Vcore= (set at 1.65 in BIOS) 1.632/1.632.

At load: 12v= 11.648/11.84, 5v= 5.08/4.892, 3.3v= 3.296/3.264, Vcore = 1.58/1.60

-looks like all the voltages except the 12v line are kind of the same between the 2 PSUs, but the 12v line is more stable under load on the Antec PSU.

So far I'm pleased with this new PSU. I bought it hoping it would be quieter and it definitely is so I'm happy. I wasn't having any voltage issues with my old PSU so I wasn't looking for any improvement, but it does seem that the 12v line is more stable on the Antec PSU. That's probably a good thing for us Northwood OC'ers.

EDIT: Case temps under load are about 1C higher with the new PSU, CPU temps are the same.
 
I have a couple questions about this PSU. It says it has 6 power connections, does this include the dedicated fan connections? Are the fan connections 3 or 4 pin? Where is it available?
 
Skawttey - My PSU has 7 regular 4-pin molex power connectors and 2 more 4-pin molex connectors just for the fans. Those 2 are marked "fan only" on the plastic molex body. That's a total of 9 molex power connectors, plus it has 2 power connectors for the floppy drive, the big ATX power connector, the 4-pin square 12v connector and the flat 6-pin connector. It also has a fan speed monitoring connector.

I got mine from Antec. Paid full boat 🙁, but that's the price of being an early adopter. According to the guys I talked to at Antec, these should start showing up in stores late this week or early next week. They sent me mine as soon as they unpacked it from the shipping crate.Still has that "new PSU smell" on it.🙂
