What do you guys think? I like the blueness of the Fortron, but i've always like Antec. This will go into a Athlon X2 and a 7800GTX.

Get the Antec. It offers significantly more amps (assuming I was looking at the same Fortron on NewEgg). Your setup with that hi-end card may need the extra power. I'm running an Antec 2.0 480 which I like a lot - quiet and powerful.

why don't you get the 450W fortron that isn't blue.
or would you rather have color and sleeving over more power?

I have the 500W Blue Storm and love it. I also have an Antec TP running my kids system, but I'd take a Fortron over it any day.

Yes, Fortran has a fine reputation, as does Antec. I have 5 Antecs running my family's compluters. (Also 4 Antec cases.) So I'm a bit biased, based on my personal experience. If Hexium VII is limited to choosing between only those two PSUs, he should get the Antec. If he can spend more for more power, then he can get the Fortran 450 or 500, or a comparable Antec TP 2.0, or consider a couple of other quality brands. "Quiet" is quite high on my priority list. I like your sig definitions!

Wow, $50! What do you guys think about that PSU? Should it be able to handle top of the line components as long as you don't want SLI?

yeah. your 400w is just a painted $36 model. the 400w fortron for $36 has the same specs. this 550w is a much better buy.

mwmorph, thanks for the info, but just to clarify, you meant the 450w, not the 550w right?

Get the one mordantmonkey suggested if you can accept its looks (I have the exact same one but 400W).

Most Fortrons are about even with most Antecs, but the BlueStorms are significantly better than anything Antec offers (or anything else Fortron offers), at least as far as build quality and efficiency.

So definitely get the BlueStorm.

If you look on SPCR, the Antec TruePower 2.0 ranges from 58.4% to 76.4% efficiency. The BlueStorm ranges from 77% to 80% efficiency (and it's 79%-80% for most of the range). So the Antec's maximum efficiency is lower than the BlueStorm's minimum efficiency. I'm not saying efficiency is the most important thing. It's not. But it's a good indicator that the BlueStorm is a much better PSU.

The Antec is probably better than any other Fortron, though. There are cheaper Fortrons which never even reach the 70% efficiency they claim. So I think "get the Fortron that isn't blue" is probably the worst idea.

i'm pretty sure that the -PN fortron models are just unpainted unsleeved bluestorms. they even both have "noisekiller" automatic fan control. but i could be wrong. note: i have a 400w blue storm.

edit: looking on google it seems no one knows conclusively. the saga line hasn't been out long enough to have any serious reviews.

That's what I always thought, but the Aurora line with the 120mm fan (and even LEDs and fan controllers in some models) was pretty much the predecessor, and it's the one that peaks at 69% efficiency (and it's 65-66% efficiency for most of its range).

http://silentpcreview.com/article106-page4.html

Again, it's not a bad PSU. I put one of those 350W Auroras in a Thunderbird 1400 system that totally killed the 350W PSU that came with the case, and it's been running fine for years.

I just think if I was trying to save money, I'd get the XClio 450W, because those cheaper Fortrons probably aren't anything special:

isn't the xclio made by channelwell? not a bad little unit. they also put more amps on the 12v2(cpu) than 12v1. nice.

Nobody said you get 4000 posts in a year by actually thinking before you type.

The Bluestorm also comes in a plain version. FSPxxx-60THN. Without the sleeves and blue paint.

The AX450-PN seems like a budget PSU without any form of PFC. The FSPxxx-60THN/Bluestorm comes with optional passive PFC.

A Bluestorm or Greenpower would beat the Antec TP2 in terms of efficiency anytime. Plus the messy Antec cables are a turnoff -_-"
