Antec Thermal Compund

Some of you may have read a couple posts of mine on the subject of my hot P4 1.8A. It runs 45 degrees with little or no stress.

I need to replace the thermal pad with some good silver compound. The only thing they sell around here is Cheap CompUSA crap, and Best Buy has Antec Silver compound (9.99 for 3 grams).

Is it worth waiting until Tuesday to get Artic Silver 3? Are they (Antec vs AS) about even, or does AS have a sizeable advantage? I would overnight it from Outpost probably unless someone knows of a better place. Also, is 3 grams more than enough or should I get 6? I know I don't need much, but I need to fill the gaps in the Heatsink and the chip according to their website. You are bound to have some waste...

Thanks

In my experience it is always worthwhile to wait a little to get the right thing. Of course, few of us do that. 🙂

For your other question, 3 grams is more than enough. You only have to use a quantity like a grain of rice, so it's pretty small. More isn't better by the way =)
Put a thin layer, like a sheet of paper (clean your heatsink and CPU with alcohol before doing that and DO NOT use your fingers to spread it.) To spread it even, people usually suggest a razor blade or a credit card (that you should clean to avoid contact between thermal grease and dead cells from your skin and oil from your fingers)

I hope it helps you...

Antec thermal compound is a fine product. I don't think it is equal to ASIII but then again what is. The difference is so small though that I would just get Antec if it is easier and you cannot wait. There is nothing wrong with the Antec.
🙂

$9.99 is way too much for AS

As3 will set you back $6

You won't need 3 grams, AS will probably be obsolete by the time your halfway through

OR you can get arctic alumina (comparable to as2, easier to remove) for $3 and free shipping @ case-mod.com

As my wife says.. I always have to have the best... which leads me to another product where less is better.. the $50 Zaino car polish I got bringing us back to always having to have the best.

Damn... I need sleep.

Anyway, I am going to order the Arctic Silver, and have it overnighted. Only problem is, every place I look online they are out of the 3 gram tube. The only place that has it (that I know of) is Newegg, but I ain't paying $28 to overnight a 3 gram tube of AS3.

Outpost.com has the 6 g tube for 12 and they'll overnight it for $8.

Anyone else have a better deal?

Tips for getting off a used thermal pad?

I know once I fix this little problem this CPU will fly... I had it at 2Ghz without much change in temp at all.. and at PC900, the RDRAM was cool to the touch. (Week 10 2002)
