Ok, hope this ain't a repost. This is HOT! The Fry's in Sunnyvale is selling the Antec Sonata Silent case for $79.99 out the door ... no freakin' rebates required. I verified the price with a Customer Service rep and verified with my own eyes on her computer. Fry's SKU# = 3558634. Deals ends on 1-7-04

This becomes white super nova lava hot if we can PM this price at Best Buy. This would mean we could get it at $79.99 - $40 in rebates. Hot!

EDIT: 01-05-04 11:30am PST - I called Best Buy to try and pricematch it. The rep told me that they would NOT pricematch it since their price is $79.99 after rebates. Hopefully someone out there will get lucky.

Hiya Scrappy! :D You can definitely say that again. I'm consistently getting pissed off at Fry's deals that I can't take advantage of. :(

I'm glad I'm far from a Fry's. The less bargains I see the better. I'm one of those "the more you buy...the more you save!" type people. Every bargain I jump in on puts me a little more in debt.

On topic: Since I do have a Best Buy near me, I think I'll go for the Sonata rebate deal.

what does paino black mean? is it glossy black wood?
Glossy black like a shiny black piano. I'm sure you've seen one and when they are painted black, you can't see the wood grain.

To clarify, the cases are not made out of wood. (I know there are some people at AT with comprehension issues) ;)

Think of it as similar to high-gloss black paint, kind of like on a car (Except I doubt these are powdercoated).

I transferred my components into the Sonata last night. I was really DISAPPOINTED with it and I am regretting buying it. First, I found the design to be very awkward in regards to installing components (especially hard drives). There were a lot more sharp edges than I expected for a case like this. Personally, I don?t like how ?glossy? the paint job is ? looks kinda cheap to me. I could have looked past all these issues if it had delivered a significant silent experience, but it didn?t. My previous case was a Lian-Li PC-65 with 3 80mm Vantec Stealth fans and a silent Enermax P/S, and I couldn?t really notice a difference in regards to the noise. I guess I was expecting too much. Maybe having 4 hard drives and 2 CPUs has something to do with it, but I definitely have buyer?s regret. My 2 cents ?

Anyway, the Sunnyvale Fry?s still had a ton of them last night. Again, the deal ends on 01-07-03. Sorry to hear that other Fry?s aren?t running the same deal.

The 120mm Antec case fan is quite. and Antec has some nifty features designed to keep things quiet (like rubberized screws).

BTW, the side facing hard drive racks are designed for SATA drives.

I have a super quite computer and it measures at 24db at 1 meter and I use the Antec Sonata case. So if you want a quite case, this is a nice case. But if you are buying this to make your system quite, but all the rest of your componets are loud.... well, you are a fool :)

Now if you want to read a lot about this comptuer, you should shoot over to ArsTechnica forums and check out the quite computing forum. There are oodles of posts about this case and other computer quieting tips.

It's only quite when running at very low speed of the fan only connectors.

It's nifty but since the drive doesn't touch any metal it doesn't allow any transfer of heat off the hard drive to the case.

How do you figure? They are just designed for easier access to install & remove hard drives. The connector side of the hard drive should be inserted first and the ide cables are easily and discretely routed in through the rear (motherboard side).

I called up staples, and PMed to Fry's Price of 79.99.

I gave them Sunnyvale Fry's number and after they verified the price, they oked the PM to $74.99 (110%)

I have no other coupon but the $30 off $150 I got just today, so I ordered two and applied the coupon.

Total came out to $129.88

2x $74.99 = $129.88
-$30 coupon
+tax (8.25%)
-----------------------------------
=$129.88 for two

or $65 each including tax. So if you are in the Bay area, you can PM and get it around this price, depending what kind of coupon you have.

But after I got off the phone, I was wondering if this really is a good deal? I already have an old antec full tower case, but it runs on 4 80mm fans and it does get pretty loud. Was wondering if this would be an upgrade, in terms of silence?

I know the Antec 380 PS itself cost over $60 by itself, so this is probably a good deal, but I was thinking about getting it at Bestbuy, and return in a couple hours to get the PM. Then, it would be even a better deal = $79.99+tax - $40 rebate = ~$40. Of course, I might get shut down and have wasted a couple hours of my time driving there and standing in line for PMing. Did anybody tried that yet?

In Texas it's still 129.99. Tried to think of a way to get this for the 79.99 price but couldn't... Any ideas?

Also, as some have pointed out, if this case is not so good, what else might be comparable or better below $100 (shipped) in cases? I need a couple new ones, and the 'toolless' feature is nice.

If you don't use the a low noise CPU fan don't expect miracles on the noise front.

Mines still a work in progress but it's going to be nice when i'm done with a laser etched side window.

If you get some vantec stealth 120's, or panaflo your system will be dead quiet and cool. the antec fan is semi quiet. In my system all I can hear is my zalman. The case, and rubber mounts do a great job of dampening the HD sound. Watch out for sharp edges around the back of the hard drive cage, I have blood remnants on my fire wire cabel to prove t.

Hey.. Excellent idea flipping the hdd around. I haven't tried to build with this case yet, but people have been complaining that it's hard to close the side case door when you use round IDE cables. Your solution certainly fixes that problem.

Also, by looking at your case, I see that the intake fan mounts away from the front. Good idea from Antec because that will cut down on noise right there by not having that front case fan near you.

It's not a bad case after all. I may keep mine now.

BTW.. Did you sleeve the power supply wires yourself? Was it difficult?

Thanks, glad you like it and got some idea's. I wanted a really clean look(hence the hard drive turned the other way). As far as i'm concerned the harddrive is turned the correct way and all the case review photo's installed it wrong ...lol. It's funny how every person looks at the same thing differently.

Yes I sleeved the PSU myself and yes it was a pain in the a$$ as a 1st timer :)
I even replaced the PSU fan with a panaflow while I had it out. Sleeving is not hard if your a DIY techie by nature but it's still time intensive regardless to "do it right". I sleeved everything and removed case cables I don't use like front USB and firewire to clear clutter.

That being said, you have to wonder why you don't see too many people with a sleeved case job when showing off their case mods. I might be low-balling the difficulty level maybe? I sleeved and modded another PSU I had laying around and it went a little smoother the second time around. Just stuck that one on ebay ;)

Sleeving isn't that bad. I'm in the middle of doing my PC too. Finished the fans and CCFL wires, now all that's left is the PSU. Actually planning on cutting all my cables to custom length and recrimping the ends, get rid of all the extra slack to make it look cleaner.

What if you change drives or your motherboard?

Where do you guys buy your sleeving supplies? I'd like to give it a try. Also, how do you remove the molex connectors?
