Antec Solution Series 300w PSU good enough for 1.8A OC rig?

Unfortunately, the PSU in the refurb Antec PP660B I bought from newegg doesn't work and I have to RMA it back for refund, and $110+ for a new PP660B is too high for my current budget. Right now, I'm looking at either the Antec SLK2600AMG (SS300w PSU) or maybe one of the Enermax FS-501 series cases with a Powerup 300w PSU, which only has 10A on the 12v rail compared to 15A for the Antec PSU, so I'm leaning towards the Antec case. So, my question is, would either or both 300w PSUs be enough to power a 1.8A OC rig? It will only have 2 drives (one HD, one CD-RW), will have a R7500LE card and no PCIs (or a NIC at most) at first, but I'll upgrade the video card in a few months and may eventually upgrade to a PCI sound card. I probably won't increase the vcore much, if any, though I may crank it up to 1.65-1.7 just to see what it can do before I back it down to 1.5-1.55 or so (I want this thing to last at least 3-5 years). Also, if anybody has any experience with either case, I'd appreciate any comments. I would also especially like to know which case would be the quietest. I do prefer the fan options on the Enermax case over the Antec one (which only has 2 fan slots).

Not sure if it's any help but I had a Dual Athlon MP 1500+ rig running fine on a 300W Aopen....and that had USB 2.0, 2 NIC's, AGP Graphics, 2 7200rpm HD's.

Newegg customer service is pretty good. Did you call them and explain your problem? Maybe they will switch out JUST the power supply for you (maybe even allow you to upgrade). I hate to see you get hit with return shipping for a refurbished case! Give it a try.

300w seems alittle low...depends on your o/c...if you want the very last drop of juice out of your chip...a better PSU is needed...but i have seen few peeps with 300w and survive with good o/c...

Gonzo2k, thanks, but I have to ship the case tomorrow in order to get it there before the RMA period runs out (8/15), but they're gonna reimburse me for up to $10 of the shipping costs (which is $13.84 at fedex), so it won't be too bad.

SupermanCK, I realize that 300w is far from optimal I just want to know if its "enough", I'm probably gonna keep the voltages pretty near default. In fact, if I can hit 133FSB (2.4) with a 3:4 mem ratio at default voltages, I'll probably just leave it there. I was going to get a cheap Chieftec Antec clone and pair it with a True Power 330w (or maybe get the $50 Chieftec with Foxconn 400w PSU), but newegg pulled down all the Chieftec midtowers 🙁 OTOH, if anybody can point me in the direction of a good case (preferably something besides white) with a good (and preferably very quiet) PSU for around $70-80 or less, I'd be grateful. lol Codegen has a cheap case with a 350W PSU, but it looks too much like a Star Wars prop and the "350w" PSU puts out less power than Antec's 300w PSU. The MAXTOP cases with 350W PSU don't look too bad.

I am using a generic DEER 300W power supply that came with my case and I can overclock my P4 1.6 to 2.7 no problem. With 2 hard drives a Geforce 2 and the usualy good stuff.

Cool info, thanks! Btw, do you have any idea how many amps that PSU has on each rail? Don't worry about it if you don't have the info handy. Now, if I can just figure out which of those two cases has a quieter PSU...BTW, does anybody have a link to a page or post with instructions on doing the PSU fan mod if I get a loud PSU?

Woohoo! I called up newegg today and they said I could just RMA the PSU instead of the whole case, problem solved! (Newegg rocks!)

Glad you were able to get that fixed CrazySaint 🙂

Is all of the power supply hype overkill?? I've been running a overclocked (only a 25% oc) Intel system for a couple of years with a 235 watt AOpen that I've been told "won't" run my system (2 CD-RW drives (12x & 32x), 16x DVD drive, 32x CD-ROM drive, 4 hard drives, PCI modem, ATA/100 PCI card, 256MB memory (2 DIMMs), Radeon 64MB VIVO, Soundblaster Live PCI card, 4-port USB hub, USB scanner). I guess it works because I don't run it all at the same time, so everything isn't drawing power simultaneously...

I do think some people go a bit overboard on wattage, claiming you need 400-500w, or whatever. A lot of it has to do with the quality of the PSU. It may have a lot to do with people being used to crappy PSUs, since you will need a PSU with a much higher wattage rating to get the same amount of power that you would get from a high quality PSU with a lower wattage. For instance, a 300w PSU from a company like Antec, Enermax, or sparkle will beat a 400w PSU from a company that puts out crappy PSUs.
