The idea isn't that you need one to keep it running. The idea for the cooler is for those of us that use a laptop more than a few hours a day it is a great way to keep the laptop at a fairly decent temp throughout it's use. Heat is the enemy of electrical components and keeping a machine cooler will help to preserve its longevity. We aren't looking at these becasue our laptops won't function without it.
I just received the Bytecc from Newegg today, and this is by far a better cooler than the Targus. I also like the way the unit puts my laptop at an angle, it's much easier on the wrists and puts my hands in a much more comfortable position on the laptop. My only compalint so far is the unit is rather loud, so for those of you who like a quiet laptop, this model probably isn't for you. I may be lookng at getting the Antec model soon, just to compare the two. Overall I'd say it is a good buy, but this is only after one day of use.
