Yes a notbook cooler is something very useful. My laptop is on about 20 hours a day, and sits on a cooler for about 17 of them. If you are a heavy user it is well worth it. My machine runs at alot lower temp, and the RAM and hard drive get cooled as well.

I've been using this BYTECC NC-500 for a year now and it's great. When involved in SETI races I would crunch 24/7 for 5-6weeks on it and thanks to the cooler it stayed stable and cool. I position the 2 fans to perfectly align with the two hot spots on the bottom of my Compaq 900z and while normally under extended heavy load they would be very hot they were barely warm.

Is one made out of acrylic bad? The aluminum one linked to on Newegg is good, but my laptop doesn't have ps/2 ports.

I actually decided to order that Bytec after seeing it. I'll have to check it out and see if it works better than mine.

I have a USB powered Targus Notebook Chill Pad. I think the Bytec model will be better.

Let us know how it works out for you. It says it should not be used on your lap because the fas blow downwards. Anybody use the Targus Traveler Coolpad yet? I want it to use on my lap and wondered how it comfortable it is? Thanks

This is the same reason I want to get one as well. I will have to look into the Antec one in Canada hopefully.

As long as you use your laptop within the enviromental specifications set by the manufacturer, these devices are unecessary. If you need one of these devices to keep your machine running, then your unit probably has some mechanical/electrical problems.

Of course you're correct, and I don't use it by necessity but because keeping it cooler is always better than not. I also like having it elevated and angled the way the BYTECC does it for me as it makes it easier to use when on my desk, patio table, ect. 25$ didn't break me either ;)

The idea isn't that you need one to keep it running. The idea for the cooler is for those of us that use a laptop more than a few hours a day it is a great way to keep the laptop at a fairly decent temp throughout it's use. Heat is the enemy of electrical components and keeping a machine cooler will help to preserve its longevity. We aren't looking at these becasue our laptops won't function without it.

I just received the Bytecc from Newegg today, and this is by far a better cooler than the Targus. I also like the way the unit puts my laptop at an angle, it's much easier on the wrists and puts my hands in a much more comfortable position on the laptop. My only compalint so far is the unit is rather loud, so for those of you who like a quiet laptop, this model probably isn't for you. I may be lookng at getting the Antec model soon, just to compare the two. Overall I'd say it is a good buy, but this is only after one day of use.

I used a targus cool pad til i found this. Much better cooling and can be used on you lap

Is the bottom of the Traveler Coolpad flat?

Jeez $40+shipping versus Coolpad for $12.95. Coolpad it will be :)

i checked out the review for that, and it only cooled 10 degrees on the Dell latitude.
is that considered alot for a laptop, or am i just ignorant? :)

the cool pad has very flat feet on the bottom but it has risers on the top back
it is just not that usable on the lap much better on a hard surface.

I think that 10 degrees is a fair amount of cooling for a non fan cooling pad
but thats just me.
Anyway now that the weather is cooler in my part of the country i dont need either one
My T40 fan only comes on if Iam doing something really intense.

You are referring to the Bytec NC-500 right?

Also, how loud are the Antec and Bytec NC-500 coolers?

Thanks.

The Bytecc is the loudest one of two that I have, the other is a Targus. See my review above.
