Antec Neo Eco 520 watter is not working out...any other psu suggestions?

I am not happy with my Antec Neo Eco 520 for a couple of reason. first its not fully compatible with my Cyberpower 600 watt pure sine wave UPS so the pc will shut down if under gaming load when the power goes out or even flickers. it works fine if idling or under light load and there are power issues though.

next issue is much more aggravating though. the fan will get pretty loud and even rattle a little bit when playing demanding games and things get warm. its not even hot in my room and gpu and cpu temps are fine but this psu cant take much heat or much of a load at all before the fan becomes a problem. Crysis 2 is the most demanding game and even that is usually only pulling 350 watts or so at the wall so this psu should not be struggling.

I am not too happy about this and hate that I have to shell out more money for a new power supply after only 3 months. my Delta built Antec earthwatts ran perfect for the nearly 3 years I owned it and never had an issue with either UPS or was the fan ever loud under load. I know I have a warranty but I assume I would have to pay for shipping which will not be cheap. plus I have a feeling that the next one of them could have the same fan issues too.

I am about to go look on newegg but if someone has a good 550-650 watt psu in mind thats on sale please let me know. thanks
 
Im running a few of the XFX 650W's and they are solid units with quiet fans, they are seasonic made units. I have seen them cheap on sale.
 
I think I will go with the CORSAIR TX650 V2 for 79 bucks. I don't really keep up with power supplies too much though so I will try and find some reviews before pulling the trigger.
 
I got curious and decided to do a little experiment. I bypassed to UPS and went straight off the wall socket and had no rattling noise at all coming from the psu during the exact same loads that made it rattle while using the UPS. I have even cranked the heat in my room and made it much much hotter and still no psu fan rattling with the UPS out of the way. now the psu fan was certainly ramped up but it was perfectly smooth.

I am now going to go back through the UPS just just to make sure its not a fluke. if it does rattle and get super noisy when using the PSU then its certainly a conflict there that could easily happen with another psu.

maybe my UPS just does not like the Seasonic built Antec. that certainly sucks because we have a lot of random power issues in this area and that darn UPS cost me about 130 bucks too. anyway will report back after I see if the noisy fan rattling comes back while using the UPS.


EDIT: okay well its 100% confirmed that its the UPS causing the psu fan to rattle. well actually I guess vibrate would be a better description. going straight off the wall and there is zero issues.

so good news is that I do not technically need a new power supply. bad news is that I cant use the $130 UPS. I will give Cyberpower a call tomorrow but I doubt they will give a crap about this issue.

They might care, i went through 3 cypberpower UPS's before deciding they are junk and purchasing a APC unit. But cyberpower was good at answering the e-mails and handling the RMA process, this was years ago though.
 
well Cyberpower is sending me a brand new ups and gave me a prepaid return label for mine. I think it will still cause the same issues though but at least they are making an effort.

keep us posted...would love to know if your UPS was faulty, or if it was a genuine simulated/pure sine wave issue between the UPS and PSU.

i have an Antec Neo Eco 620C (which is SeaSonic-built just like your Neo Eco 520C) in my work PC, and its plugged into an APC BE750G UPS. i never get any funny fan sounds, even when under full load and the PSU fan has throttled up a bit. i also have a SeaSonic S12II 520 (which is the same PSU that Antec buys from SeaSonic and relabels the Neo Eco 520C) in one of my home rigs, and its also plugged into an APC UPS...no fan noise problems there either. interestingly enough, both my Antec Neo Eco 620C and my SeaSonic S12II 520 PSU's supposedly require pure sine wave output form the UPS, and neither of the APC UPS's they're plugged into produce a pure sine wave...and yet, they both work flawlessly during surges and outages.
 
Almost exactly one month ago I told you that the issue you are seeing also repros with a Topower PSU. This problem is NOT exclusive to Seasonic. And it's good to see that you finally did some troubleshooting.

I commend Cyberpower for paying for shipping and sending you a new unit, but don't hold your breath.
 
I've built two rigs with the Neo ECO 620W unit, both hooked up to an APC non-pure sine wave UPS, a Back-UPS XS 1500, and neither had a single problem at all, made no weird noises, nada. Have my main rig running off that same UPS right now....Corsair AX750 power supply, and again, no problems, no weirdness.

Think Cyberpower is the culprit, not the power supply.
 
okay I decided to do way more testing so as not to waste Cyberpowers money if it was not their UPS at fault. it looks like I CAN make the fan rattle even without the UPS so its looking like a power supply issue after all. there seems to be just certain psu fan speed range that is a bit unbalanced. last night when I tested without the UPS, I apparently did not hit the right conditions as tonight it vibrated and rattled even without the UPS. its not super loud and if i have the headphones on with lots of action then its hard to hear it. still it does not sound good and the psu fan seems to run really hard under full load. in fact until last night I had though it was my gpu fan.

so bottom line is I think I need a psu better suited to my rig. pushing this one to 70-75% of its rating when the case is warm just makes the psu fan work way too hard. considering it will be 10-15F hotter in here during the summer then a much better psu is makes sense.

EDIT: I just ordered the CORSAIR TX650 V2 for $79.99 shipped plus it has a 20 MIR so for $59.99 total it seems like a good deal for what I need. it also as a 30 day price guarantee so that is nice.

I have now been using the CORSAIR TX650 V2 for 4 days and it does a much better job. that Antec Neo seemed to struggle with heavier loads such as Crysis 2 on max DX11 settings. the fan had to work way too hard even though I never used more than 75% of its capabilities.

i'm glad you were able to find something that works for you...

...i'm also kinda surprised you had success given the route you took - i had a Corsair TX650 v2 myself not too long ago, and while it wasn't loud, it was never really quiet either...especially at system idle b/c its fan speed does not vary according to load (or maybe it does incorporate this feature, and it just wasn't working on my particular unit...i don't know). regardless, it was too loud for me, so i just keep it in the closet now as a spare/testbed PSU. at any rate, i guess i prefer my SeaSonic S12II 520 to the Corsair TX650 b/c its MUCH quieter at idle, and never really gets that loud under load....though i suspect my load is currently less than 50% on average. that'll change soon though, as i'll be adding an nVidia GTX 560 Ti and a GT 430 to the mix real soon...should be interesting to see how loud the S12II 520 will get b/c the GTX 560 Ti will be under full load 24/7 (crunching Einstein@Home), as will my 1090T 6-core CPU, which already crunches numerous DC projects...so i'm sure i'll be drawing more than 75% of the rated 520 watts.
