Thank you sir! In for 2! The irony is that last weekend my neighbor was doing his first PC build ever and he was so impatient for me to get off of work because I have a veritable museum of TIMs, he went off to BB and OD to look for grease but was unsuccessful yet here it is on clearance. I remember back in the day of RadioShack, they even had OG silicone/zinc oxide that would have sufficed. Times sure have changed! I'm not complaining because 4g of the good stuff for six bucks shipped is spiffy. One syringe will be going to said neighbor :) I also explained to him about the article that random compounds will work in a pinch, even mayonnaise, ketchup, toothpaste, etc. were much better than bare metal to metal for at least 24 hours

What's the shelf life of this stuff like - particularly unopened, but since I'm asking anyway, after opening as well?

That's a good question. I've got tubes of AS5 that are several years old, and it's still (as far as I can see) good for usage. (I put the cover back on the tube, though, when I'm done using it.)

And I think that the MX-4 packages say it's good for 8 years. But I think that's referring to the application, not the tube's shelf life. Which I imagine would be longer?

I've got AS5, AC MX-4, some DeepCool Z-5 (was $5/tube shipped at Newegg, what the hey, in for two), and some white grease that was really cheap. Didn't order any of the Nano Diamond, but was tempted. I've got enough thermal paste to last a lifetime already. Probably even if friends borrowed a few tubes too.

Edit: What the hey, you guys talked me into it. In for three. :)

I picked up a couple this morning, too. It's actually been a while since I've needed any thermal compound, but this past weekend I pulled apart a nice used computer and cleaned it up including removing and dusting the heatsink/fan. I could only find a partial tube of AS5 in the house, so I replenished my stock.

In for a couple. Plan to switch from the H80i to the FX100 at some point and glad to have good TIM for that change.
