Antec KS-288 Cooling question

We just purchased a couple Antec KS-288 cases to evaluate them for possible use on our PC builds. We use the SX1240s for server builds and love them, but I'm curious about the optional fan bay on the KS-288.

The 80mm fan bay on the front of the KS-288 seems to me a weird place to put a fan. For those who don't have one, it's right on the front of the case, just under the 3.5 inch bays, by the PC speaker. Is the fan supposed to blow air inside our outside of the case? I am confused because the only opening where air can come in or blow out is a hole on the bottom of the front panel between the plastic front and the chasis. Since most of the time these cases will be on the floor, a large percentage of that hole will be blocked off. Am I missing something?

Do fans in this location provide benefitial cooling?

Yep they do but not "excellent" if you want that level of stock cooling I would have had you look at the 830's or waited for the 630's which are due out in June I believe.

Definitely have air coming in at the front bottom. Hot air rises in the case and in the room so you'll be geting the coolest air in the room and sucking it into the coolest level of the case. Then that cool air will circulate(due to the intake fan) and get warmer, thus rising and being blown out, at or near, the top of the back of the case. This is pretty much the standard case cooling methodology.

The front bezel (cover) should have a large gap at the bottom/underneath - that's where the majority of your cool air will get into the case via that front fan.

But like I said before it's adequate (sp?) but not excellent cooling.

Many overclockers and case modders would automatically "dremel" out the metal in front of the fan (with all of the holes in it) and most would add (AT LEAST) a larger or higher CFM fan in place of that 80mm fan in front.

That's the short version. There is tons of info for the "long version" but I recommend reading some other posts for all that info.

hth & good luck.

🙂

The short version was very helpful, thanks for the info!

I was worried about the relatively small hole and the fact that the floor blocks a major portion of the airflow...
