Antec earthwatts 430 run a 4870?

I built a friend a budget Phenom system with decent onboard (790gx) graphics. Next will add a video card to speed up games. He has a 2.3ghz quad core.

I know people with the antec earthwatts can run a 4850, not sure if anyone can run a 4870 with that PSU. According to some reviews on tom's the 4850 maxes out at 231 watts power and the 4870 uses about 280. I'm thinking GDDR5 ram would help boost it. Also plan to use hybrid crossfire on his board.

As soon as stupid newegg gives me a link to my public wishlist, I'll share the whole build. Evene when I email it to me they don't send me a link when I email it, grrrrr. :|

Moving to the PSU subforum.

It will handle it fine. Like theAnimal said you'll need a molex to pcie connector, but most cards usually come with one.

Yes.

My q6600 @ 3.2GHz, lightly OC'd 4870 (790MHz core, highest CCC allows), 3 hard drives, watercooled, at load is about 360W from the wall.

That 7200.11 hard drive is a mistake.

And the Phenom 9600. Get a Phenom II X3 instead.

Change the RAM to G.Skill HK, better timings for the same price.

Well, we were going for the cheapest possible system, saving a few buck on every part. Worked 2 combos at the time to save 50 bucks. Just decided that PSU and case are not worth skimping on for reliability and system cooling/life, respectively.

Everyone is sure a 4870 will work? Even a stock overclocked one like one from Asus? It runs a full 65mhz higher on the GPU.

Well with 30A on the combined rails it should work, but I wouldn't recommend running it for too long. You would be better off with Antec Sonata III case/PSU combo for $120 shipped, which is about the same $ and you get a 500w PSU w/34A on the combined rails and it comes with 2 x 6pin PCI-e power connectors, so you won't need to use the supplied 4 pin to 6 pin adaptor. I wouldn't skip on the PSU, espcially when using power hungry CPU/GPU that you have selected. The 4870 generally uses about 130w (see my link below for GPU power consumption numbers) for the plain vanilla version, so you can bet that you'll use just a tad bit more with an OC'd version.

Antec Sonata III Case/PSU combo
<forgot to mention to mention to Get $20 off w/ promo code Antec72, while supplies last> So you would get the combo for $100 shipped!!! Much better deal and cheaper than your option!!
