Antec Aria question

Looking to build an Aria SFF.

Will a NON-AGRESSIVE approach as far as highest speeds and such keep me from drilling holes in the case?

I saw the Shuttle MN31N as a recommendation. I plan to use my older Athlon XP 1.33 to start - along with my 40 gig Seagate and Nvidia Gforce3 Ti200 (64 mg).

Anyone with first hand info - without the drilling part being necessary? Is there a better recommedation for a mainboard that will fit - away from the PS?

Thanks

I don't know how much heat the Ti200 puts off - but you should be okay with all of that in an Aria. I ran barton 2500+ in mine for a month before I started modding. Temps were high but tolerable. When your looking at higher speed CPU's, consider the Athlon64's and P4 Northwoods as they tend to run cooler than the AthlonXP's and P4 Prescotts.

As for the mobo, any microATX board will be a snug fit. I've used the ASUS A7N8X-VM and the P4P800-VM with the Zalman 7000a Cu and it fit fine.

All kinda depends on what temps you are comfortable with. I'm a cooling freak so I modded intake vents with fans, drilled out the PSU etc.

Good luck

With your mods - did it stay pretty quiet. That is one goal that I am after.

Thanks for the input.

Yep. After the mods it is extremely quiet. I added two 80mm panaflo L1A for intake. Modded the heck out of the PSU to allow better exhaust and replaced the 120mm antec fan with an enermax that had better CFM/dB ratio and added a 4 fan rheobus with 4 temp probes. Not to mention sleeving the PSU, routing and tucking cables, silencing vga card and replacing top plastic panel with aluminum.

This was certainly not the "NON-AGGRESSIVE" approach to cooling/silencing an Aria but it was a fun project. It's being painted right now...can't wait too see it finished.

pm me if you have any questions - I can show you pics and stuff if you are interested in modding it.

A couple of the components that you plan to re-use have been in a couple of PC's here at my place. I'm also still using a GF3 ti 200 -- that one was and is cool-running and quiet. There was no "Athlon XP" when the (original AMD) 1.33 cpu was released. I have one, it's still in use. It's just a PLAIN "Athlon" 1.33, not an "XP", and the core is named the Thunderbird. It runs quite hot for its speed (there was a similar cpu later on with similar capability, and TTBOMK, similar heat generation, with the name XP 1500+). Right now, in a mid-tower with a retail hsf and a nearby 80 mm exhaust fan cooling it, MBM 5 says it's at 133 degrees Fahrenheit (what's that in Celcius? Hmm? I've forgotten how to convert it, but it's not exactly "cool" nor particularly hot, but I think I would change to a *more serious* hsf unit if I moved MY Thunderbird cpu into a SFF box - same for an XP 1500, I think).

You do know that there is an AthlonXP that IS 1.33GHz though right? 😀
it was called the 1500+ 🙂

Thats what it is ...the XP1500. It runs at 1.33. Actually - as of now it is only running 1.0 in an older MSI board that is not supposed to support XP.

Now that we know it is an XP - is that a better CPU solution from a heat perspective?

Thanks for all the input.

You should be fine as long as you don't fill up the slots with cards.
The biggest issue (besides overpriced and oversized on the outside, yet still too small inside, not quiet, and cheap looking front) with the Aria is it uses up a slot position for exhaust fan. No provision for intake fan without modding.

The shuttle motherboard you want is no where to be found. Good luck. Excellent board, and worth the search.

In my stock Aria, I run a 1.55v mobile XP2400+ at 2100MHz, MN31/N, along with Zalman CNPS7000A-ALCU, and CPU temps run around 57C to 62C. Since all slots are filled, no room for exhaust fan. System is also too loud.

I will soon be selling my Aria, and going back to a slightly better case, Athenatech A100BB, at 1/2 the price.
The A100BB was a much quieter case, and had much better cooling in stock configuration.
It is about the same size front (77.625 Square inches Vs 76.87 Square inches for Aria), but a little deeper, which gives you the interior room for better cooling.
Yes, the Aria has 300w, while the A100BB has only 200w, but it is still enough for 9700Pro, Sat DVB-S PCI, HDTV PCI, etc.

Hi, I am planning on buying the MN31L from newegg, it's $71 dollars shipped, i think. I would love to get the MN31N for the firewire, but i haven't seen it anywhere to buy for a decent price! anyone seen this rare motherboard? =) Thanks, J.
