Antec Aria PSU Dead?

I have an antec aria and am having troubles keeping it on. It shuts off seemingly randomly. Sometimes it will shut off if I put the case top back on (before I get it on). Sometimes it just shuts down right after starting. Sometimes it stays on for hours.

I'm wondering if I have a short or if the PSU is going bad. If the latter is there any place to buy a replacement? I have modded the psu with an aftermarket fan (adjustable and more powerful) but that was about a year ago.

System specs, how much money are you spending and how much wattage?

I'm pretty sure the Aria uses a proprietary PSU - may only be able to get a replacement from Antec. But take measurements and check around - it might be a TFX or a PS/3 style. Those you can find around.
I don't think he'll be able to RMA it unless it's the dreaded "bad cap" problem as he has already modded the PSU. I'm sure they'll disclaim any responsibility due to the mod.

It's got a Sempron 3100 at stock speed, OEM heat sink, 2 512 meg pc3200 sticks of generic ram, 1 250 gb EIDE drive, a dvd burner, a d-link wireless pci card, a radeon x300 se, and the pci fan that came with it. It's just a machine for my kids so it doesn't need to be fancy. It was running fine a few weeks ago. I had an old dvd drive in there and it was having trouble reading cd's. I also had a 6600 (passive cooling) in it. I swapped out the 6600 to take to work (play COD2 over lunch) and the dvd and have been having trouble with random shutdowns ever since. Seems odd with the timing but I don't think it's a driver issue because it will shut down before getting to windows. In the last few hours it has stopped booting completely (gets to startup screen and locks up).

I think I might try yanking the video and wireless cards to see if that helps. I don't know that I can put anything but another 300 watt PSU in there because it's a proprietary format. I'll check with the guys you suggested to see if they can do anything. Thanks.

i'd try undoing the things you did before it started acting up first, then move on to other possibilities.
 
I've got an Aria....the PSU is completely propriatory. An exact replacement is necessary......or you can get a PICO 200w dc/dc converter and an external 12V power supply, like I did. This gives you the ability to use the former PSU hole for a case fan, like I did. It makes the whole computer cooler and quieter.
 
Here's the PICO 200w converter. I bought a 12v 180w power supply from Radio Shack. With the std PSU removed from the case, you can fit a bigger HSF and a rear case fan. In it's stock configuration, that Antec PSU runs very hot and loud. A new one is likely to fail again. IMHO......it's a POS.
