I am about to buy Antec 300 and H50 kit, when I got this idea of making the setup to perform even better by installing a 38mm fan versus the standard 25mm fan.

Will such a combination work? Can the 300 accommodate for a radiator and the "fatter than normal" 120 fan such us this Panaflo:

Any thoughts on possible gains for such a setup?

According to this review there isn't much gain from increasing fan cfm. (The stock corsair pump, radiator and fan are likely a very well matched combination)

But then I have another review that says different. Look at the bottom part of the page on this link--->http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1025/6/

Thanks for the second link...
It looks like they have tweaked the H50 so that the pair of Noctua NF-P12 120mm fans is installed on the H50 in the regular - exhausting configuration (the way it should be according to many). According to graph the temp drop is substantial.

Another alternative then would be to try to use 2 fans in the regular exhausting config. If the space in the case is tight, there are alternatives: Just use 120mm by 12mm fans, like those:

Edit: I have found a great 120mm fan roundup done by the X-bit labs:
