i have an antec 1200 with 6 fans. 2 at the rear, 3 at the front and one big fan up top. i have a stock i7 920 and i ran a core temp program and when i was playing games it went up to 60c. and when i ran a stress test program, the temp went to almost 87c around 10 mins of testing. so i take it i should up the grade the fans and the cooling( I plan to overclock), is this easy to do on my own. I didn't build my computer I got a local shop to do it. if they mounted something wrong, would there be a way to tell? (i don't hear any noises)

Would Help to know the heatsink you are using, what thermal paste and what are your ambient temps.

Is the CPU using the stock cooler ? It seems to me like the heatsink isn't mounted correctly.

Perhaps more importantly: what app are you using to measure the CPU temp? And what sensor is it reading?

I dont know about core I7s but I get wildly different readings on my S775 depending which app I use. Speedfan, avast and lm-sensors (on linux) are easily 20-30C (!) apart.

I have no idea which one is correct, but my BIOS shows barely a few degrees above ambient temperature (think thats measured in the socket), the heatsink (scythe mugen) doesnt even get luke warm so I suspect he 70C idle lm-sensors gives me for the cores is quite wrong (especially since under load it barely gets any warmer). I think avast gets it right, you might want to try that.

The 120m fans in the Antec 1200 case does 79cfm when at max. Unless you are willing to replace them with 110cfm 120m case fans. But it does sounds like the cpu cooler was not installed right.

I just have a stock fan mounted on the processor(I did check to see if its not on there properly and it seemed to be on there snug). I do plan to replace it with an aftermarket one. I had a friend pick one out for me at the shop he works at. so i hope this is will solve the problem. the program i am using to measure the temps is Core Temp. Is there a better program i should use? and what program should I run for a stress test and for how long should i run it?

87c is hot. A aftermarket cooler is a good idea. If you are going for the best then a NH-D14, megahalem, TRUE would be the top ones to look at, paired with a couple of good fans and hope you can hit 4 Ghz.

I use Prime95 to stress test. Real temp for temps, core temp gives the exact same info though.

87c is too hot, do not run for lengths of time at that temp if you can avoid it. For reference ive been running prime95 for over 11 hours now to test my new overclock i7 930@4.2Ghz, my temps are 72c right now. During the hot part of the afternoon i was up to 84c.

I would run prime95 for at least 12 hours to consider it 100% stable. Linx is also good to test with.

Stock cooler, theres your problem right there. The Antec 1200 has enough airflow, thats definitely NOT your problem. Your shitty heatsink is your problem.

yes depending on my ambient temps, my CPU stays around 50c above ambients. So if its 20c in my room it runs around 70c while running prime95, if its closer to 30c in here it runs closer to 80c.

Thats OC'ed to 4.2Ghz with a Noctura NH-D14 and the 2 stock fans running full speed. Also have 3 120mm case fans and 1 140mm case fan so its getting good airflow.

And yes Prime95 for 12 hours would be the minimum i would run to be 100% sure that it was stable.

I left my CPU running prime95 for almost 2 days to test my 4.2Ghz overclock and am now confident it is stable.

Your case is definitely not the problem, which has been pointed out before. My first inclination is that the stock cooler isn't mounted correctly, I'd try re-seating that first of all, and get some decent thermal paste on there while you're at it.
If you want a decent overclock you're gonna need a new cooler anyway so perhaps just get that instead.

Go after market, AC Freezer Pro 7 is a win for the price. E8500 OC'd to 3.8 staying under 34C idle is godly.
