I don't know the proper terminology but I want to attach an external monitor and use it to view something other than what is already on my laptop screen

I did this once just to experiment and I could only find a setting for cloning the existing display.. not as a separate display or desktop..

Laptop is a Inspiron 9300 with 128mb x300

There should be a little checkbox that says extend my windows desktop onto this monitor in the settings tab under display properties.

I've heard that Dell limits this particular functionality on the 9300s, but I don't remember. Slicedbread's advice would be the way to go, and if that doesn't work check notebookforums.com (Dell section).
