*answered*A7N8X-X won't run in dual channel

I have two sticks of Geil Ultra 512 meg of PC 3200 2-6-3-3-1T in slot 1 and 3 but the boot screen says single channel mode. So I tried slot 1 and 2 ... same thing. The bios detects a full gig of ram and so does windows. No options in bios to select dual or single channel. I am using user defined settings becuase if I use SPD it configures the FSB at 400 mhz, which is out of sync with my XP 2600+ at 333 mhz. Any body got any ideas? Here are the specs:

XP Home/SP2
Asus A7N8X-X Rev 2 w/nf2 v116 chipset drivers and 1009 bios
XP 2600+ Barton 333mhz (locked)
2 sticks geil ultra 512 mb slot 1 and 3
pair of Maxtor diamond max's 40 gig at ide 0
Radeon 9700pro/Cat 4.9 and CCC

A7N8X-X is single channel only.

Yeah the A7N8X-X is single channel only......... if you run the A7N8X-E you can run dual channel.

This is the second post I've seen today where someone with this mobo thinks it outta have DC.

This looks like another marketing screw job like the NF7-S2 and NF7-S v2. In otherwords, the A7N8X-X is a stripped down/feature-lacking mobo named too closely to the a7n8x (nForce DC etc) and causing consumer confusion.

On the bright side, it's no great loss in most scenarios. I'd be more annoyed at not getting a Gameport outlet than at losing dual-channel operation They'll pry my (three) Sidewinder 3D Pros from my COLD DEAD FINGERS :evil:

I wouldn't call it a marketing screw job. People need to read the spec sheets and manuals that are online before they forge ahead. It is almost always available at the manufacturer's website, so it's not like it is some hidden, proprietary secret. Maybe it's me, but if I am looking at two boards with similar names, I'm curious about what the difference is. Especially when one costs 50% more than the other.

As for ASUS, they use a naming convention that dictates all of the motherboard names.

Not to pick on DaveBC. Looks like he's got a respectable system on his hands, and as mechBgon said, dual-channel isn't going to add much, anyway. He gains more performance by sync-ing his memory and CPU speeds, anyway.

I know this board is not supposed to have dual channel capability but for the heck of it I put 2 sticks in my little server box that runs a A7N8X-X and cpu-z shows it running dual channel!! WTF ?? cpu-z bug?

I also did a few mem benches in Everest and my mem speeds are on par with the A7N8X. weird.. did i get a dual channel chipset on my no dual channel board?

yes it's very weird indeed. got me confused. maybe Asus ran out of non dual channel chips on that day. hehee
