Answer Machine error

It's a cordless AT&T phone, says this machine cannot accept messages. Tried to kill the power and unhook the battery and it still says the same thing. There are no messages on the phone. It displays what appears to be an error code A on the base.

Have you set the outgoing message and time/date yet? There's also an Answer On/Off button somewhere.
 
It doesn't appear to have that option to change the time/date like it used to. I'm blaming made in China and it's a piece of junk.

What buttons are on the answering part? Do you know the model number?
I have an AT&T cordless phone/answer combo, so the setup may be similar. On mine, you have to hit set twice and then keep hitting change to cycle the hour, hit set, hit change to cycle the minute, hit set, hit change to cycle the day, and hit set. Then it repeats the time and day back to you.
