there are 4 people in a car. there is 1 umbrella which fits 2 people at a time. it is raining and they must get to the house without getting wet. after reaching the house, one person must walk back with the umbrella so the next couple can walk to the house. a couple can only walk as fast as the slowest person in the couple. what is the least amount of time it will take to get everyone to the house if:
one person takes 10 minutes to walk the distance from the car to the house.
one person takes 5 minutes to walk the distance from the car to the house.
one person takes 2 minutes to walk the distance from the car to the house.
one person takes 1 minute to walk the distance from the car to the house.

I say they drive the car straight through the front door and not even use an umbrella

A king has 1000 bottles of wine and 10 servants. One of the bottles has a poison that will kill the drinker in 24 hours. Using his servants as test subjects, how can the king find out which bottle is poisoned in 24 hours?

Wait - I still want to know why 25 stubs makes 6 cigars.
Since 5 stubs = 1 cigar, 1 stub = 1/5 of a cigar. You have 25 stubs so you can make them in to 5 cigars. When you smoke those 5 you are left with 5 stubs. Those 5 stubs can be made in to 1 cigar. You smoke that and are left with 1 stub. You can't make any more cigars so you have smoked 6.Originally posted by: daveshel

1) 1 and 2 walk across = 2 minutes
2) 1 walks back = 1 minute
3) 5 and 10 walk across = 10 minutes
4) 2 walks back = 2 minutes
5) 1 and 2 walk across = 2 minutes
Total: 2+1+10+2+2 = 17 minutes

The best I can do is this:
Each servant drinks a mixture of 100 bottles; bottles 1-100 go te servant #1, bottles 101-200 go to servant #2, etc. Twenty-four hours later, one servant will die. We will then know that a certain 900 bottles are safe to drink. The servant that died had drank the poisoned bottle diluted with 99 other safe bottles. We could continue the mixing of the bottles' contents until we found out which one was the poisoned bottle, but that would exceed the 24-hour time limit. Since the 24-hours is up, I guess the king will have to toss those 100 bottles and be satisfied with a paltry 900.
Bah, there's got to be a way to ID that one single bottle...

I hope it's not a really dumb answer like "it tastes different" or something.
