Is there something wrong with questioning the Billions being spent and where it's targeted ? Should the public have any input at all in where their money is being spent and what benefits to the public might come from the research ?

Does all research have an immediate, tangible benefit? Sometimes, it takes years of basic research to just understand how something is working then many, many more to do something that can harness that knowledge gained.

I'm not saying the public shouldn't have any input though. I just doubt public input on specific projects, since the media tends to blow things out of proportion or misrepresent what studies are really looking at.

Since Coburn R-OK has a problem with NSF, how about he asks Oklahoma universities to return their NSF grants?

There's nothing wrong with the public questioning how their tax dollars are spent. There's something wrong with doing it in a stupid way though. You have every right to question, but if you want to be taken seriously, you should put some thought into the questions before asking them.

Is there a way to be taken seriously when you're asking about funding for a treadmill for shrimp?

Seafood is a 78 billion dollar industry and some 40% of all the seafood Americans eat is now farmed. Shrimp farming alone now accounts for maybe 10 billion dollars of the industry. Estimates are within 20 years wild stocks of seafood will be so depleted farming will be the only commercial option left. In other words, its a growth industry and my guess is the government is supporting them with a little research.

"We are requisitioning funds to appropriate the necessary materials to test shrimp metabolism under different conditions, including under cardiovascular stress. This information will prove vital to future research in marine biology and applications in the marine industries."

Exactly, shrimp metabolic rate is pretty important for knowing how fast they are going to fatten up off the feed. If a tiny treadmill gets the data the scientists are looking for, who cares if some ignoramus form Oklahoma or other retarded white trash thinks it's stupid or not?

Its the golden rule, judge others before they judge you and always hoard your gold.
