I suggest you go read the NSF proposals and related publications before you make ignorant statements that they "spent 500k to build a treadmill".

500k was probably the total funding from NSF. 1/2 ore more goes to the university. You pay grad students a stipend, their tuition and insurance, etc. New equipment usually has a budget too.

That article is so brief it's frankly impossible for a reasonable person to draw any conclusion from it whatsoever. For all I know the shrimp metabolism test is part of a final phase for a silver bullet cancer cure and once the shrimp can prove they live then next up is a 50,000 person trial with expected 98% cure rate.

And I rather doubt the government actively has paid for jello wrestling at the south pole, so I assume it's talking about people who happened to jello wrestle for the hell of it during off duty even though maybe they are "technically" on 24/7 duty or something stupid like that.

In any event, this has nothing to do with Obama or whoever the current occupant of the White House is or their party, this is about wasteful spending. If anything, those who are progressives ought to be as outraged as anyone since boondoggles like this mean less money for social programs, unemployment, or infrastructure - ya know, things that aren't completely pointless?
