This sucks, knew someone in the biology department back in undergrad that studied shrimp, she could not even get the cash to pay someone to provide her with living shrimp to conduct her experiments on, so she had to go get them herself.

Quiet you, government research outrage is only fashionable (among certain types) when it impinges on academia. You leave the military gravy train alone now, mkay?

Sorry but average joes shouldn't get to decide what science is worth studying.

I'll just add science funding is also a matter of national security. Yes, even crustacean research.

Maybe the NSF would have gave me more money if I told them I was trying to teach shrimp math.

Doesn't the OP know that he isn't allowed to question what the NSF is doing with the $7.045 Billion it was budgeted for in 2010? Sorry, but it just isn't permitted that some plebian taxpayer can be allowed to question our elites about how they spend their cattle's money.

I hate misplaced and ignorant anger.

I have no idea what this story is about because I'm fucking drunk as hell. But I really hate when pe... fuck it. Too drunk to make my point. I'll check back later.

Oh yeah... It has something to do with spending X on some seemingly lame thing that has no apparent value that eventually pays back 10-fold...

I can completely understand why Obama says cutting a couple billion dollars from the budget would be apocalypse. After all, no business is going to pick up the slack if you take away federal money for researching Jell-O wrestling at the South Pole....

Where was your complaints about this under your Hero Bush?

Oh that's right..........crickets

So we're going to get the shrimp into top-shape, and then enter them into the underwater Olympics, and eventually take down that $5 million Mermaid cup? Fucking craw fish have been hustling us for years!

Go NSF!

You know, if we cut any sort of contractor work for the DoD, the next step is no funding for bullets and vests.

I suggest you go read the NSF proposals and related publications before you make ignorant statements that they "spent 500k to build a treadmill".

500k was probably the total funding from NSF. 1/2 ore more goes to the university. You pay grad students a stipend, their tuition and insurance, etc. New equipment usually has a budget too.

That article is so brief it's frankly impossible for a reasonable person to draw any conclusion from it whatsoever. For all I know the shrimp metabolism test is part of a final phase for a silver bullet cancer cure and once the shrimp can prove they live then next up is a 50,000 person trial with expected 98% cure rate.

Who fvcking knows. Articles like this just mean nothing I'm afraid.

And I rather doubt the government actively has paid for jello wrestling at the south pole, so I assume it's talking about people who happened to jello wrestle for the hell of it during off duty even though maybe they are "technically" on 24/7 duty or something stupid like that.

Articles like this are meant to draw out the rabble anger.

Hell, we just bought a magnet that costs more than that, before we've even begun any work. Of course, the magnet is going to be the centerpiece equipment in our lab for our research.

I'm pretty sure I did complain about similar things during the Bush era. In any event, this has nothing to do with Obama or whoever the current occupant of the White House is or their party, this is about wasteful spending. If anything, those who are progressives ought to be as outraged as anyone since boondoggles like this mean less money for social programs, unemployment, or infrastructure - ya know, things that aren't completely pointless?

But is the shrimp thing really wasteful or is it that the headline is just grabbing at some attention grabbing grant title and distorting what a study is really doing?

Is there something wrong with questioning the Billions being spent and where it's targeted ? Should the public have any input at all in where their money is being spent and what benefits to the public might come from the research ?

Dissent is patriotic. But only if you question the right wing. The left wing is never to be doubted. Just ask Craig.
