i was playing HL2 this morning on my dell (the xps rig in sig) and i turned on 16x AF and 6x AA @ 1600x1200

game plays fine. minor stutter when too many enemies at once but in general it plays smooth

i was playing for about 2 hours when i heard a beep coming from the system and i get bumped out of the game (game did not crash), it was ATI Catalyst giving me a warning that my card is overheating (78 celsius) and if I decide to continue it will do so at a lower clock speed to prevent card from bursting into flames basically

so i went back to HL2 and shut down the game, looked at the Catalyst software and watched the temperature dropped back to 55 celsius.

at the time of the message, my AC was not on and the room ambient temperature was probably at 85 fahrenheit

anybody else have similar heat/temperature issue? i would think dell built their XPS with airflow in mind with the amouint of fans in there

Dell thinking about building a good gaming machine with good airflow...

I dont see that happening...

j/k dude 😛

But anywa, Dl ATiTool and set your own fan speeds. Much better as the X850 does get very hot. Mine now stays at 45 idle on 35% fan speed. And about 70 full load at about 85% fan speed.

thanks. i find it wierd that the threshold to warn me would be near 80 C degrees. i go into my nvidia 6800 gto (in my other rig) and the threshold default by nvidia is 135 celsius!!! :Q:Q

can you say boiling water? :Q

EEK!

Yea 80 to 90 c is probaly best to leave the warning threshold on, but set the fan to your desired speeds.

So in fact you might be able to make it slightly quieter.

is your xtpe at stocks speeds or oc? just to let you know for comparison, my idle speed for my non pe xt is right now 46 C 🙂.

never OC'ed. it came in as part of the dell xps gen 4.

i think its my apartment. maybe i'll turn on my machine again to test it out since i have AC on now

ah usually the ambient temperature can have a good impact for your comp. Make sure your pc is not in an enclosure of some sort. Better make sure it has a breathing room for the intake fans and exhaust fans do their job also 🙂.

right now my pc under the desktop does make my legs warm lol

i have AC on for about 2 hours. now its 45 celsius for both GPU and ambient.
just got ATI tool, will play around with it. im not big on OCing (since i can play HL2 with 16xAF and 6x AA at 1600) but really dont want this card to burst into flames

looks like it works well. i am testing with ATItool and controlling it to stay at 70 degrees. fan is on probably 100% now when i run the tests

yes it seems alright, not to mention the x850xt runs pretty hot when it is full load. It sure does raise my case temp for me lol 🙂

but it will suck to play a game and have friggin catalyst tell you it will underclock because of the high heat. man maybe i should turn down AA to 2x or 4x?
