Another Win98 Install Problem

Stretched

Member
When I copy the Windows files to the hard drive and try install from there, it says a file is missing. When I install form the disc I get all the way to the end and then I gat a "Fatal exception error" Rundll32 caused invalid page fault. I have tried repartioning and formatting. When I FDISK /mbr it takes about 30 seconds and comes back to the prompt. I cannot figure it out. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem trying to do a fresh install with the CPU overclocked. The solution was to clock the CPU back to default and start all over.

ErraticMax my CPU is K6III 450 not overclocked.I am in the middle of repartioning and formating before I begin the install maybe I should slow the CPU down some?

I just tried to setup the hard drive with MaxBlast and it gave me a warning that the Master Boot Record could not be found. What next?

Stretched,

Your cpu is OC. K6-III are notorious for that. I had one but replaced it with a K6-III+. This new chip is slower at the same speed becuase the cache is off on writes, but the is much more stable and HEAT is much lower.

MY probs with old chip was it would not install Win 2000 and had probs like you discribe with 98se and win me.

Solution would be to replace the chip or find a utility online to turn off the writes to cache. I had it before but lost it once I replaced the CPU.

Good Luck

obenden's suggestion about IDE controller made me think the problem was due to the Promise Ultra66 card. I moved the cables around and it finally loaded 98 without errors. Thanks Alot Guys!!
By the way I am thinking of win98SE for my next OS, what about ME?
