Another which card thread - 9600Pro vs 5700 Ultra

OK -

I haven't found the 5900 non-ultra anywhere for under $250 so I am narrowing it down to this choice:

Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 Ultra at $199 vs. ATI 9600Pro for $129.

Which would you choose? Is the 5700 Ultra worth the extra $70?

Keep the flames to a minimum and the info valuable please.

Thanks.

199 for a 5700 is a rip off.

Newegg sells the Leadtek 5900nu for 195, and the eVGA for 215. If you are truly sent on getting an FX card, then pick up one of those.

I'd save the cash and get the 9600 Pro. I've got the Sapphire 9600 Pro and its a solid card, handles everything I throw at it without any complaints. Plus its fully DX9 compliant.

9600pro for $129 is a really good buy. The 5700Ultra may perform a little better but definetly not worth $70, not even $40 + the 9600pro overclocks really well and you can reach XT speeds surely, which performs better than 5700ultra.

Geforce FX 5900 for 195

I'd still take the 129 dollar 9600 Pro over the 195 FX5900 though.

129 for a 9600 Pro is a great buy, where did you find that price?

You like ATi and want a affordable graphics card = 9600Pro (You want HL2) 9600XT
You like Nvida and want a affordable graphics card = FX5700U (Your a risktaker and have $20 - $40 more) FX5900NU

Sold out. 🙁 For a second, I was going to add a decent video card to the machines I have to build this Christmas.

I did get mine at Compusa - if you have a local store check yours. I did and I got the last one yesterday. With 14 days to return it I will not open it until I am sure I want it... that and the rest of my new system parts aren't in yet.

Well I like Nvidia and have a bad past history with ATI - but I am not sure I want to pay $70 more for a 5700Ultra. The one game benchmark that bothered me in Anand's review was Neverwinter Nights - That is a game I really like and the 5700 Ultra blew the doors off of the 9600pro.

I haven't felt comfortable with a video card purchase since my GeForce 3 Ti 200; that was clearly a good deal. Now the companies are making it fargin' impossible to make a choice it seems.

Do not get an fx5700 ultra, you shouldn't even be considering it. Either keep your 9600 pro or get a 5900 for $200.

Did that 9600P come with HL2? If so, it's a great deal on a midrange card.

A $200 5700U is pointless when you can get a 5900 for only ~$20 more. Don't waste your money on a 5700U--it's not a good deal right now.

Firing Squad had the 5700U ahead of the 9600XT in 29 out of 34 benches. Both cards were at stock speeds. And by the way, the 5700U's are getting psychotic overclocks. That's just one reviewer. So now go ahead and feel free to discredit them. 🙂

No; it did not come with Half-Life.

SilverLock, I think Neverwinter nights is an OpenGL game which always is faster on nvidia hardware.
Just like Doom3, Jedi Knight or something like that..
I agree that you should consider a 5900 over a 5700 being the costs are so close.

Bateluer is not the GF FX oracle, his $195 model has the feeble 700MHz memory. CompUSA and Best Buy have been selling real 5900s for $200 after rebate, and the page he linked has a Gainward in stock for $229.

Don't make the 9600 Pro mistake. The card is feeble and crippled, you'll wish you had a better one if you buy it. Get a 9700 if you want ATI/DX9 for around $200, get a real 5900 if DX8.1/OpenGL are more important.

if u can pull $200, then the BFG from bestbuy or the PNY from Compusa would be the best buy

otherwise, $129 for a 9600 pro is better than $199 for a 5700

If you decide to get the 5900NU make sure get one with the 2.2ns memory as opposed to one of the 2.8ns cards.
