The guy is a jackass, but I can't say the girl didn't deserve it.

What I would've done is told the girl we are going dutch. If she says no, you talk to the waiter, say,"I only got this," and pay for your food, and leave. That way you aren't a jackass, and you get to keep the jacket.

OP: you are not a nice guy, and you didn't get even with her. You advertised for someone to take on a date: you ask = you pay. If she'd asked you out, she'd have the same obligation. If you're too much of a wuss to just tell her you're not paying for what she orders, if you have to lie and sneak your way out, then you have no business dating. If you didn't like her attitude, but didn't have the stones to call it quits right there, you have no business dating.
