Read this on some site, what do you think?:

<< GET RID OF THOSE POP-UPS-

The best, cheapest and free methog of stopping 99% of all ads is to
modify the host file in your c:\windows directory.(C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc) I add in all the
sites I want to block and set their address as 127.0.0.1 which is a
loopback address. I am able to surf lots of sites and there are big
beautiful blank spots where the ads used to be. Especially the cnet
sites large middle of the page ads. The x10 evil popups still come
up but they are blank. If you find any new ad sites just add them
into your hosts. file

Here is a paste from my hosts file. You will need to edit the
c:\windows\hosts.sam file which is the sample file with notepad and
save it as just (hosts.) Note when you save as, make sure you pick all
files from the file type otherwise it will save it as hosts.txt which
will not work.

c:\windows\hosts.

or you could just download Mozilla. In its advanced settings it has a place where you can check or uncheck "open unrequested windows". Uncheck that and no more popups :).
