New Update:

I took my computer out of its case and WHAM! it worked! Kinda weird...

But, every once in a while (every time is CS) my computer just freezes... like completely...

Ive used a new power supply but i still get the same problem

And, quite often, I get a every high pitched noise comming from my computer... its either the video card, ram, or CPU... weirdness

My hard drive is fine, its not too hot, so im pretty sure its not that

Like always, any help would be appreciated

EDIT: I went to Fry's and bought a new power supply, but now my problem is reversed...

Before my Power light would go on and my hard drive light would stay off.....

But now its the exact opposite!!

i know power is going to the Mobo cuz the HSF is runnin and my northbridge fan is also running....

Im not even getting beeps from the Bios....

I pretty sure my motherboard is not grounded to my case because it was working fine beforce i started having problems and I haven't shifted or moved my Mobo....

PLEASE HELP! AHHHH

Hi, I rectently built this computer

CPU: AMD Athlon T-Bird 1400MHz
Motherboard: Soyo SY-K7V Dragon
Memory: 256 MB of Crucial PC 2100
Video Card: Chaintech (Nvidia GeForce2 Pro 64 MB DDR)
Hard Drive: Maxtor 20.0 GB @ 7200 RPMS

Anyhow, I have two problems....

1) When I turn on the computer, it wont boot until I hit the reset button, sometimes i need to hit it several times

2) When I play counter-strike, its fine for 15 mins, but all of a sudden it will just freeze on me..... like completely

Any help would be apreciated, I have already flashed my bios, ran a virus scan, but still nada.... any sugestions? THANKS!

I dont think my processor is overheating, MBM shows it topping off at 53C with ambient temps at 37C

On my Video Card, GPU cooler, there is one little fan fin missing, but that shouldn't be a biggie.....

What wattage, combined output, and brand of power supply are you using? It could be the problem. Also, have you updated the 4in1 drivers and detonators? It's always wise to check your bios settings as well to make certain they aren't causing the instability. However, the power supply is where we should start.

this happened to me on my AMD 1GHz (Abit KT7E, GeForce2 32DDR, PCI128, 256MB PC100, 300W PS)system before... everytime i turned on the computer, it wouldn't boot till i hit the reset button. i tested one by one from video card only, then sound card, then network card.. still the same. finally, i was so upset and just took them all out, put them in another case (with the same power supply). it is fine now.. really strange..

1)I would look at power issues first

2)I would look at heat issues

3) I would look at disabling acpi in the bios if not already done...

4) I would look to make sure the board is not grounding itself out by touching case and that the case wires are setup correctly...

Yea, it definitely seems like it's probably a power supply issue. If you have an extra one lying around give it a shot. If not then you know the drill.

Thanks guys,

I'm using a 300 Watt Power Supply (seems generic, can't seem to find a brand on it)

I dont think heat is a problem..... I mentioned my temps above and they seem to be in the acceptable range...

However, I noticed when the computer locks up.. (it just did on me and i was just in windows) I noticed the Hard drive light doesn't go on..... odd.....

I already have the most recent VIA 4 in 1 drivers and the most recent detonator drivers.....

I think I'll check my PS.... HOPEFULLY it isnt my hard drive

Well, I have one or two suggestions. Check your case wires from your power-on and reset are connected correctly to your motherboard.

Hmmm...but further reading of you post leads me to believe that this problem just started

<< ...because it was working fine beforce i started having problems... >>

You might want to take a good look at the motherboard itself. Check all the capacitors, etc., and make sure none of them have leaked/exploded. I ran into similar issues with a system not wanting to boot when hitting the power and reset buttons. Later we could smell something burning, but could not figure out the source. It turns out that 16 capacitors on the motherboard blew. The system didn't immediatly stop working, which is why we didn't think the computer was the culprit for the burning smell (it continued to work for several hours in fact but sometime durning the night it stopped working).

Have you tried a different IDE cable and/or using a HDD diagnostic? Also, did you try fail-safe default settings in the bios?

Use an AMD approved power supply - For the sake of an extra few pennies ---- It is the most important (if it is possible to say this without getting flamed) and probably the cheapest and easiest components to fit in your new system.

Also, check the automatic cpu heat cutout is set to a reasonable temp.

Take out your vid card and see if there is a problem. If not, then take out every non-important component one at a time - ie sound, floppy, cd, blahblah.
Hard work but this is the only way you will be sitting at your own homemade soopadoopapoota that you and noone else has laid hands on. It is very satisfying in the end so don't give up - everyone has had these little (it will be after you have fixed the error) hiccups.

MAKE SURE you haven't 'unintentionally' o/c'd by a mistake without realising. Time for that once the system is up and running.

Best of luck fella

Try removeing all unnecessary componets, reaseating the Video card and booting. If you have no problems ad the other devices one at a time. It sounds somewhat like tha video proiblem at the moment but could be alot of other issues.
