3 guys go for dinner, each buys a $10 steak. At the end of the meal, they collect $30 between the three of them to cover the cost of the meals and gives it to the waitress. She goes back to the cash register, where the overlooking manager says "Those dinners are discounted, you need to give them $5 back." So the waitress gets the five dollars,
and returns to the table. Not knowing how to split $5 between the three of them, she gives 1 dollar to each of the three patrons, and kept two for herself.

Now if you do the math, together they paid $30, got $3 back meaning they only paid $27.
The waitress kept $2. This totals $29.

Where did the last dollar go?

10$ a Steak....$30, 3$ goes back to the men, and 2$ she kept. That accounts for all 5$. It's all in the way its worded ;) Men wound up paying $9.33 each.

Its how the math is done $30 is original total minus the $5 discount new total is $25. Each gets $1 dollar back she keeps $2
Total is 25+1+1+1+2=30
Its reads as (30-3)+2=29
The dollar did not go anywhere

I did this from an asset and liab. standpoint.

Guys Rest. Waitress
-30 +30 0
+3 -5 +2
-27 +25 +2

The 29 comes from incorrectly wording the adding of the wait. assests with the the guy's liabilities (-27 not +27). The guy's liabilites are -27+2 waitress assets=-25 which balances with the +25 assests of the resturant.

I dunno but this is not even tricky.

25 in cash register. 3 back to patrons. 2 to waitress.

$30 total.

This obviously hasn't stumped anyone on anand yet.....

But, this site is full of "geeks"
Unfortunately, the majority of the population at large (p.a.l., or morons, as I like to call them) would lose sleep over this.

After the 500th repost even some of the Republicans can remember the answer.
