The eariler 1Ghz Athlons are Slot A & have 512k of L2 cache which runs at 1/3 cpu speed. The T-birds are socket A & have 256K L2 cache that runs at cpu speed. The T-bird is faster & uses a more modern motherboard.

However,
you must also note that sometimes the "t-birds" are also called "Athlons". The "classic" athlon is the older one, and the "t-bird" athlon is the newer one with the full speed lvl2 cache.

Yes, and most of the Tbird will be found in the socket A format. It would be fairly hard to find a slot A tbird around. The tbird should definitely be your first choice, since it is much faster, and can actually sometimes be found for cheaper than the "classic" counterpart.

And if you find a SlotA tbird, dont get it... the mobo's are already "obsolete". Also, any KX133 slotA mobo can't take a tbird faster than 800 (except Asus K7V-T)
