Convicted sex offender faults a slow police chase for his frostbitten toes

BANGOR (AP) -- A convicted sex offender who's wanted in Florida got more than he bargained for when he fled into the Maine woods when approached by a detective.

Harvey Taylor lost a few toes to frostbite earlier this month, and he says it's the fault of police who were too slow in arresting him.

The 48-year-old Taylor spent at least three nights in the woods in Mattawamkeag after running from a Penobscot County Sheriff's detective.

Taylor is recuperating in a Bangor hospital while awaiting extradition to Florida for violating probation. He's also threatening a lawsuit.

He says that if Det. Timothy Jameson had done his job properly, he would still have his toes. He says he didn't realize Jameson was a detective.

Chief Deputy Glenn Ross says Jameson acted cautiously and professionally. Ross said Taylor has to live with the consequences of his own decisions.
