I was at my gym today and I saw some dude hawking the sixpad, which looks like an updated fancy version of those old ab belts. I didnt think anything of it then i came home and turned on my tv and saw a commercial of cristiano renaldo (sp) working out, then putting his sixpad on after working out. I looked it up afterwards

looks like it claims to do some stuff above and beyond what the ab belts of the past do. Has anyone seen this around in the states yet? does anyone here who's serious about working out actually use it or is it another snake oil product?

The technology is no different than electrical stimulation, which has some proven benefit for muscle growth / muscle recovery. But you can get the same thing by buying a few of the $20 devices from amazon and arranging them on your abs if you want.

Either way, EMS will never give you a 6 pack by itself, and frankly speaking a 6 pack doesn't really come about by working out your core harder, it comes from losing significant body fat.

This technology was developed to work muscles on bedridden patients and it does help prevent wasting muscle but it does NOT help building muscle in non bed ridden patients.

All it does is contract your muscles and that won't really do anything since they are not working against a load.

There are no magical ways no matter what muscles you're going to build, you have to do the work or it won't happen. With abs it's almost 100% subcutaneous body fat though so you have to get that down before you'll see any results.

In other words, you'll need to lower your calorie intake and work out, there are no shortcuts.

marketing spin-
does this mean that people who are "bedridden", sitting on the couch and watching tv like that hot girl above will be able to maintain their six pack if they use this?

You'll maintain a six pack no matter what since that is the actual shape of the muscle. ;) You won't see it until you get rid of the subcutaneous fat that covers it though.

But let's go with the idea that you have worked up the size of your abdominals by doing resistance exercise. Will this help you maintain that muscle mass if you stop doing that?

No, it's a fundamental truth about resistance exercise that once you stop doing what you did to build up that muscle your body will quickly return to normal.

So what does "maintain muscle mass" mean in the scenario of the bedridden patient? Well it means that it will maintain a minimum of muscle mass, less than anyone who is not bedridden but enough to ward off a wasting state. It's normally used on other parts though, primarily the quadriceps, since the abs get worked enough to render it completely useless in almost all situations, you are using them even just sitting on the couch.
