Plainfield North Physical Education Teacher Charged with Having Sex with Student
A female high school teacher alleged to have had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old male student has been charged with felony criminal sexual assault.
Ashley Blumenshine, 27, of 4316 Nutmeg Lane, Lisle, was arrested early today after she was discovered with the student at about 6 p.m. Tuesday in a parked car in the parking lot of Kohl's department store, 11860 Route 59, Plainfield.
According to reports, police stopped to check on two cars that appeared suspicious. The pair was discovered in one of the cars, Blumenshine sitting in the driver's seat and the student in the back seat. From interviews it was determined the two had just finished having sex before the police arrived, reports said.
Blumenshine, a physical education teacher at Plainfield North High School, has worked for Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 since 2006, district officials said. The student attends Plainfield North.
Police Chief William Doster said it is believed the relationship has been ongoing for about a month. The pair met "socially" and Blumenshine has never been the student's teacher, he said.
Blumenshine is being held at the Will County jail pending her bond hearing at 1:30 p.m. today.
District spokesman Tom Hernandez said the administration and school board would take "appropriate action" after Blumenshine is released from custody. Arrangements have been made for a substitute teacher to assume Blumenshine's teaching duties, Hernandez said in a release issued Wednesday morning.
Counseling services will be available to students needing assistance.
