Republicans have enough on their plate and now this. If Craig really wanted to help the republicans he would resign that way it give the person that replaces him time to get his/her name in teh papers and a heat start on the election. Now they will have to fight for his seat back and this will be a issue to again hurt republicans.

I am not defending him but the uproar, especially from left, is amusing.

The only "uproar" present is coming from the Republican base.

Yep it is the GayOleParty leadership that ahs asked the ethics board to look at him, not the Dems. But i guess mroe and more spin from the republicans to follow.

Senator Craig is doing what's best for America, sitting tight (as opposed to wide) till he's thrown out in 2008 :D

All hypocrisy aside (running on a campaign of morality while soliciting sex in a public bathroom), I don't see any reason for Craig to resign. What he did was technically illegal, though I can't really imagine why. People solicit sex everywhere; bars, lounges, airports, jobs, the mall, the street... Pretty much the only places left on Earth that you can go and not expect a solicitation for sex is a monastery/convent. Sex is a biological imperative, a driving need at the core of every living species (apart from those that reproduce asexually, obviously). I see nothing wrong with anyone, regardless of their position, trying to get laid. Clinton got a bj, lied about, I don't care. Craig solicits sex, tries to have his guilty plea whiped, I don't care. It's funny, but it's no reason to presume that Craig no longer knows any less about governing than when he was elected.

Not being an expert on the subject, I think the SCOTUS has ruled having gay sex in their own non public bedrooms is legal. And in the process invalidating various State laws outlawing gay sex. In a sense Pepsei makes a valid point, having gay sex in a public is not similarly protected conduct. Nor is having hetrosexual sex in public also protected expression.

But as I read various articles, it becomes my understanding that what Craig was arrested for was only an intermediate process in what amounts to a conspiracy to commit gay sex in private. And the whole toe tapping hand gesturing is merely a code for one gay man to identify a probably receptive partner. If both communicate by the same code, then a verbal conversation can be started in public, which can ultimately result in both finding some mutually agreeable place out of public view to have their gay sex.

So for me, being a typical male chauvinistic hetrosexual pig, life is far easier. Find any human female age 18 and up in any location, strike up conversation, and see if she might be receptive to having sex. Some subtlety advised. Within the bounds of sexual harassment, my own applied restraints, her natural repulsion due to my own frog like appearance, and the tender mercies of my wife standing behind me with her handy dandy portable rolling pin she will bop me with, I have thus far avoided having any conversations on the subject with cops.

Only with homosexual men or women is the added artifice of codes so advantageous in separating the wheat from the chaff. My odds are 96% to start that I am not talking to a Lesbian given that I am talking to a female. Their odds are 96% that their random target is not similarly homosexual.

Interesting stuff as always, Vic. You show that same intense dedication to truth regardless of who gets gored defending those on the other side of the road.

I have to say that for me, when I try to understand my antipathy to Craig, with regards to him being homosexual and Republican, I don't think it's the hypocrisy alone that gets me but the arrogance. This queer bashing bastard queer is going to stand before the world after pleading guilty, after saying he will resign if he can't reverse his guilty plea, and then after all that stand before the world and announce, not only that is he not gay but that he will keep his job regardless of what he's said. It is his incredible, phenomenal, titanic arrogance, his brazen and contemptuous lying in the face of people and indifference and absolute refusal to take on any shame, to apologize, with his hand firmly stuck in the cookie jar, to stand before the world, with intense passion and sincerity and eloquence maintain that he is innocent and misunderstood. He is exactly like Bush and Cheney and the rest of the Republican psycho machine killing the country with their unwillingness to admit their lies and shoving them right in your face. What they need is a God Damned kick in the teeth.

But it is contempt, hatred for themselves that was the result of hate shown them as children, that makes them forever resistant ever to go through that again. They were made psychotic and have disassociated from reality. They live in la la land and think their pretense will convince us to. All you have to do is believe and pretend.

brokendolly: Generally it seems when someone is busy fretting over what others say they see something about themselves that annoys them. Or at least that is the image it presents about yourself.
Try ignoring obnoxious posters.

M: You see of course that this applies to you with regards to Vic as much as it now applies to me regarding your post? Something about him bothered you and you didn't ignore him.

"Generally" yes, but not always. It is possible, is it not, to fret over what people say and for real reasons? It is possible, I think, to care and to care for the good reasons.

Bless Senator Craig. He is the gift that keeps on giving-especially to late night comics and the Democratic Party.
