WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rep. Paul Gillmor, an Ohio Republican who served in the House of Representatives for nearly 20 years, was found dead in his apartment, lawmakers and police said on Wednesday.

Gillmor's body was found lying on the floor in his nearby Arlington, Virginia, apartment by members of his staff who went there to investigate Wednesday morning after the 68-year-old lawmaker failed to show up for work, Arlington police spokesman John Lisle said.

The body was taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy, but Lisle said there were no signs of anything suspicious or foul play.

Gillmor served on the House Financial Services Committee and was well liked by his fellow lawmakers.

"Paul Gillmor was a man of genuine humility and deep conviction, a great public servant and a good friend," House Republican Whip Roy Blunt said in a statement. "As a deputy whip of the House, he established himself as a respected leader on issues vital to his district and our country."

Gillmor is survived by his wife Karen, and five children. Gillmor's death will not have an impact on Democratic control of the House. Before his death, there were 232 Democrats and 202 Republicans, with one vacancy.

I haven't done any research to see if he was under any "cloud of suspicion" for anything to indicate it could be suicide, (or even a hit to keep him from talking) but since he was 68, it could be something like heart-attack or some other medical condition.

I don't know how Ohio laws decide who replaces him, but since Ohio has a Democratic governor, I can only hope he replaces him with a Democrat...

I see no indication of gloating by the OP, but its time for all of us the extend condolences to his immediate family and all close to Gilmore. Later news may change things but death by natural causes is a bi-partisan problem.

Nah, no gloating intended, and my condolences to his family, but it IS an unexpected opportunity to improve the ratio in the house...

one seat isn't going to make a huge difference in the house... but the thread title does seem kinda fucked up.

It sounds like tragic heart failure, aneurysm, stroke, or something otherwise sudden and previously undetected. It's a reminder of how fragile our lives really are, as it can happen to any of us.

Let's see. You are saying you're sorry the guy died, but hope he's replace with a dem. I'm sure his family is touched by how you honor his memory.

Typical all-encompassing compassion from the left.

Not to mention the article specifically addresses the fact no foul play was suspected. But of course since its a GOP it must be

Bottom line, people die, this particular death will have little impact in changing the political climate of the country, and P&N can't resist the inclination to make this into a giant political circus. Who started this self sustaining cannibalistic orgy and when will we all grow up and learn to quit attacking the still living while making tempest in a tea pot insults to the family?

In the grand scheme of things, Gilmore now belongs to the ages, and his life must answer to a God if you are religious or historians if you are a secularist.

You're a very sad person on the inside. Grow up, get better. And good luck.

so I guess we have to change the Dem stereotype from the party of "Doom and Gloom" to the party of "Doom, Gloom and Death"

This thread makes 'em sound like a bunch of vampires.

So? People bite the dust all the time.

Yet somehow it's worse to talk about death than to perpetrate it.

If you dig into the archives, you'll see the repubs salivating over the possible replacement of Tim Johnson (south Dakota) after his brain hemorrhage last winter...we "lefties" have learned from the best of the right, including Rush and his ilk...;)

what a douchebag you are.

Improving the ratio in house would require 430 of them to leave
