There's an article in today's NY Times about waiting to buy big screen (LCD vs. Plasma) because of increasing competition that will drive prices down rapidly, particularly on LCDs. The head of TVs at BestBuy was asked about this and said:

"We do not want to talk about predictions of price drops," said Lee Simonson, the director of Best Buy's television division. "We want people to buy now."

Honest? Yes. Consumer-oriented? You make the call.

No fvcking sh!t. What do you want them to say? "I know its Christmas season, but seriously, WAIT on buying this TV, its gonna come down in price"? Have some common sense, they're a business.

You just don't get it. From a consumer's point of view, which would you prefer?

A) Company publically says prices will be falling soon and to wait on a TV

B) Company publically says prices will be falling soon but you should buy it now before they do.

Common sense dictates that most normal people would prefer option A. From a business standpoint, Option A makes more sense as well so they do not alienate a large percentage of their customer base.
From a companies standpoint, if a consumer wants to buy a TV for the holiday season, then they will buy the TV now regardless of the price drop. And they will most likely buy it from bestbuy if they're told by bestbuy that prices will be dropping soon.

well A is a really dumb business move. They want people to buy them NOW while the price is high. They paid a high price also for those TV's. So why would they want to tell people to hold off until they get cheaper? seems silly to me.

regardless on how you like or dislike BB. you can't fault them for telling people to wait. They want to make as much money as they can. So why would they tell you that the price is going to drop? sheesh.

I regret I had shopped at bb numerous times in the past buying crap. only to be obsolete in no time.
now i hate bb just like most people, hope they go out of business. they mistreat my mother too who only wanted to buy a 50' TV but they keep shoving that 299.99 4 yrs warranty crap trying to make her pay more and continue to remind her again and against like an annoying little brat. Grrr
we rather just buy a new one in 5 years, depending how long it last. It's the biggest scam.

I don't like them right now for the fact they're running their store like it's a prison for the holiday season. Areas roped off so that you can only enter/exit through one spot, that single employee that barks out which register to go to when you're in line for checkout, and having everything checked against your receipt when you leave? It all adds up to one sh!tty shopping experience.

Never been to Fry's on any given weekend through out the year, eh?

A lot of stores check your receipt during this season. I can't blame them, too many thieves around. I hate to buy electronic goods from retail stores, I find that the employees either like to misguide the buyers or they don't know what they're talking about, and many of them like to push the buyers to paying for extended warranty.

Prices will drop when demand goes high enough. Too many old fvcks are happy with their 13" black and white RCA's to upgrade to a decent television. Thank you, America.

if they wouldnt charge too much, there would be no theft. if their were no taxes, there woud be no crime.

LMAO, high prices and taxes are the sources of crime, right.

Did you go to Toys-R-Us, Walmart or Kohl's on Friday? They were all doing the same thing.

This was Sunday - and my local BB does this all through the holiday season IIRC

heh when looking for my RP DLP this weekend, i went to BB to look around and decided to ask the sales guy some questions just for the heck of it, knowing the answers beforehand:

Q: I have 4" JBL Front speakers that when I put them next to my TV, it distors the picture. WHen I move it away from the TV the picture starts to get better until its about a foot away and its fine, will this happen with my new RP DLP TV?

A: Oh yes, definitely. What I recommend is you start with your speakers right next to it, and just move them until the picture is fine. The distance will probably be about a foot until you see no distortion of the picture. The speakers will have the same effect on your new TV as it does on your 27" wega you own.

heh i thought that was pretty funny. i asked one more question that he gave a completely wrong answer to as well, but i can't remember what it was. if i remember ill post.

and for the record, i bought my tv from circuit city.

EDIT: and oh yea, at the BB i went to (Tysons Corner, VA), you HAVE to park in a parking garage if you want to go in the best buy, and its $2/hr to park there, and yes you have to pay $2 if you are in there less than one hour. i heard if you purchase seomthing, they give you a voucher to let you not pay, but still ... thats $2 just to browse

Does it make you superior that you can rub it in the face of a pimple faced high school kid that you know more about electronics than he does?

I wouldn't consider myself an electronics newbie really, and I have absolutely no idea what your question meant.

I only buy from them when I have a guarantee of getting my money back in 2 years, IE service replacement plan 😀. I've been recycling that $300 for years 😛

God I hope this is heavy heavy sarcasm.

I only go to Best Buy to get DVDs cause their prices are usually good on newly released movies, and they a lot of times have good deals on older movies. But for anything else? Fvck'em.

RobCur is too stupid to understand the concept of sarcasm...

You agree to let Costco check your receipt when you get a membership there.
