Another RAM inquiry

I'm going to upgrade my system in the spring. I know that's a long way off yet, but I got to thinking about it. Which is better? 512 MB PC2700 or 768 MB PC2100? I'd rather just add 128 MB of PC2100 to cut costs a little bit. But if 512 MB of PC2700 will give noticably better performance (primarily for gaming) then I'll go ahead and get it.

faster ram = better performance.
you wont use more than 512 ram unless youre doing things like high end video editing / graphics design anyways, and even then you'd probably be better off with less faster ram as opposed to more slow ram. games do not require excessive ammounts of ram (excesssive meaning over 256).

If you run it at a higher clock speed.If you run PC2700 at PC2100 speed it won't be any faster than if you are running PC2100.Both of my machines are using PC2100 overclocked to 150mhz just fine.So if you plan to your run memory past that I would say get the 2100 and save some money😉

Well, I already have 512 MB of PC2100 and I'm not interested in overclocking my RAM.

If you run PC2700 at PC2100 speed it won't be any faster than if you are running PC2100

Why would anybody run PC2700 at PC2100 speed? That's dumb. You don't have to overclock PC2700 just to get it to run at PC2700 speed do you?

It depends on the FSB of your CPU,if you're going to use a CPU having FSB more than 133Mhz,go for a PC2700 module.otherwise,stay with the PC2100. Running ram asynchronously with the FSB doesn't mean too mcuh.

I just bought my self (2) 256mb Kingston pc2100 my self just 2 days ago. Got them for $55 each after rebate which is not that bad for a name brand. 😉

future upgrading or overclocking
i bought PC2700 with my P4 1.8 system
runs PC1600 spec stock.
i then overclocked to PC2100 speeds, and a little farther, about PC2400 speeds. since it won't go much higher, that's good.. i can max out the settings on my 2700 and it'll be stable and fine. and it's not that much more. so i opted for the 2700 (seems logical to me)

Personally I would get the best 512MB RAM you can affored. You will notice a proformance increase in faster ram. I wouldn't recommend using more than 512MB unless you're planning to do some game server hosting. Also, good quality ram to overclock is probably going to cost as much as PC2700 anyways. My generic stuff max out at 146mhz FSB.

Over the next few months I would watch for ram prices to fall. Lately the prices have been going down slighty. Since you are going to upgrade your system during spring, I would recommend you getting a KT400 motherboard (MSI is a good choice) and get PC3200 or PC3500.

Well I was going to wait until AMD Athlon 64 came out to upgrade, but now they're saying it's going to be fall so I'll be going with something else. I may just leave my mobo in there and put a faster AMD in it, probably a barton. My games are running soooooooo much better since I put a Maxtor 7200 RPM HDD on it today, so now I'm not so concerned about it. I had Windows XP Pro on a single install for over 7 months, and it was just going to hell on me. All is well now. I may wait a while longer for a total CPU/mobo/RAM overhaul. I'll probably just put something like an Athlon 2700+ in it and a GF FX in the spring.
