I was wondering, what should I use to apply AS to the core of my T-Bird, I can't seem to get an even surface using a toothpick... Or do I just need to work at it some more?

The flat side of a credit card should do the trick. Dab a little in the center of the core, use the edge of the cc to spread it around, then use the flat side to get a nice even layer.

:D
you can follow z0ner's advice or put your finger in a ziplock bag( a la compuwiz1) or just some clingfilm around your finger pulp & use your finger for spreading the stuff!

I went out & bought a 10 pack of cheap foam hair curlers. The end of the foam cylinder makes the perfect tool for applying thermal compound. Just squeeze a little onto the core, & use the foam to sponge an even layer on. Don't worry too much about it, if your heatsink fits properly it'll squeeze all the excess out leaving you with a perfect film.

I say the ziploc bag method.. you can get really thin, even applications with this method...

I used a 2 inch piece of scotch tape folded onto itself to form a brush-like surface...straight and smoothe...easy and effective.... like painting the core...

i wonder if you got a small paint brush (like the ones from you water coloring set in grade school) could you then paint it on as was said? No more squeezing as all over your computer!
