1. What is smoking? Some other loser? Open the window
2. What is smoking? The engine? He got out of the vehicle and got onto another one

There isn't nearly enough info for there to be only one answer.

My guess:

He died on a train, if he would have been in a smoking car (towards the back?) he wouldn't have died when the train de-railed.

Good thinking. Thats prolly it.

I was thinking if he was in a smoking car like a Ferrari he would have made it home faster and wouldnt have died in the car

you're right. but if you ask more questions you'll get to my specific answer. whole point is you have to THINK and find all possible solutions.

1) nobodys smoking. he's in a non-smoking car of the train. thats why he died.
2) engine isnt' smoking. didn't get out the vehicle, as its a train.

oh, oh, all the smokers became indignant that they couldn't smoke since it was a non-smoking train, and amidst chants of "screw you raargh", they beat up all the nonsmokers, and had a cigarette.

This is a really stupid puzzle since there are unlimited answers. We will all give perfectly good answers, and just get the response "Nope", until we hit the one you happen to be thinking of.

Here is what I thought of. He was taking the train from the West Coast to the East. That means crossing the Rocky Mountains. Near the top of a steap climb, the cars somehow disconnected. The front cars (which just happened in this case to be smoking cars) stayed with the engine. The back cars (which just happen to be non-smoking for this silly puzzle) are the ones which were disconnected. Gravity takes over and they travel backwards down the hill. Hmm how will I answer the reason for death. Lets let ATOT pick. Is it
A) the backwards travelling cars go so fast, they cannot make it around a corner and fly off the tracks, falling down a steep cliff, killing the poor man?
B) the backwards travelling cars collide with another train?

Lets see, how about another answer. He is poor. Lets make him a hobo. This train has only smoking cars for passengers. The train also carries cargo. The hobo cannot afford a ticket and jumps into a cargo car. Up the Rocky Mountains the train goes. The man falls asleep. Well there is no insulation on the cars, and the mountain is quite cold. The man freezes to death.

Need I come up with more equally good answers?

The dude is just chilling in his non-smoking car, sitting around not smoking, when in walks a cloaked mechadroid Terminator ninja robot, and cuts off his head. Since it's cloaked, he can't see it, but if he had been sitting in a smoking car he would have observed the approach of the cloaked mechadroid Terminator ninja robot, because where it was the smoke wouldn't be. I win.

Was gonna say the same thing except the mechadroid Terminator ninja robot isn't cloaked; He's wearing a mink coat.

A poor man went to West Coast video to rent a movie. While he was driving home, he saw a hot girl walking on the sidewalk. Because his car was in good shape and wasn't smoking, he decided to offer her a ride. Turns out she was a serial killer, and he was her next victim. If he had been a beat up car that was smoking, he would have been too embarrassed to stop and offer her a ride.

My answer is better than all y'alls.

Since he's traveling home from the West Coast, that means he must be headed east. As the train crosses the Great Divide, a group of bandits known only as the Eastern Non-smoking Indigent Marauders of Atlanta, or ENIMA for short, stop the train and commence to raping, robbing and killing all passengers in the non-smoking section of the train. The man was both in non-smoking and he was poor, so they killed him twice just to make a point. After the ENIMA was over, all the smokers in the back had a party while the train continued on to New York where they all got off and went to a Broadway show.

I think this is one of those puzzles where we ask yes or no questions until we get the right answer.

So here's mine: Did the man get an ENIMA?

1. He was sitting in the non-smoking car, sipping on a tall glass of ice tea. Suddenly he inhaled an ice cube. Had he been in the smoking car, he could have swallowed some lit matches to melt the ice cube, but alas, he choked to death before help could arrive.

2. He was sitting in the non-smoking car when a fellow passenger lit up a cigarette. He called the passenger all sorts of names, but it was "ash-tray breath buffoon" that witnesses claimed seemed to be the final straw for the passenger. The passenger reached into his pocket, pulled out a handgun and shot him.

3. The train was passing through a mountain pass when suddenly an avalanche of snow came down, hopelessly burying the train. The people in the smoking car tore up their seats and used their lighters and matches to melt a way to safety. The smokers attempted to summon help, but years of smoking had taken its toll. They just weren't fit enough to run the 10 miles back to the nearest town before finally the train car collapsed under the weight of the snow, rocks, and ice.

4. Because the chicken crossed the road.

5. And lastly, because this isn't an original situational riddle, it can easily be googled:
The man was poor because he spent all his money on an eye operation. As the train passed through a tunnel, he thought he had gone blind again and killed himself in his grief. Had he been in the smoking car, he would have seen the glow of the cigarettes and realized what was happening.

Personally, I think 1-4 as well as the terminator and other answers above are far far better than the googled answer.
