another plextor 121032 deal- $126 + shipping - no PM hassle

The Iomega 16x (Plextor) from Buy.com after rebate is only a few bucks more and has Burnproof2 40x DAE, etc. This is still a good deal, but not quite as good as the Iomega.

I heard stuff about how that iomega drive didn't get recognized by system, doesn't work with nero, etc.

Also, i hear the iomega drive in that deal is a rebadged Lite-on, not plextor.

I have no proof of any of what i said except for that I read it on this forum.

and a plextor is a plextor is a plextor.
if you care about brand names and their solid performance and quality drives, this deal might be the one for you 🙂

You read posts from people who do not have the drive. I do. Here are the facts. The drive IS a rebadged Plextor. Prior to renaming and flashing, Nero will not recognize the drive (that was my post you probably read about Nero). After renaming and flashing (special thanks to LiQiCe for developing the hacks), Nero does recognize it as a 16x Plextor.

Yep!

I had problems with a few programs and after the flash I now have firmware 1.02 in my Plextor.. Only problem with this plextor is the mispelled silkscreen on the front of the drive that says Iomega!!! 🙂

lol! Yeah, it is ugly too. Personally, I prefer the front bezel on my Teac. No silk screen at all. Looks like an old 1x cd-rom. I love it. In fact, since I have a Lian Li for my primary PC, any silk screen on a cd-r/w looks cheezy. Thus, it's going in my other workstation and I'm keeping the Teac in my primary gamer.

Red and dark gray. On the left it says 16x10x40 in small unobtrusive letters and on the right it has a 3/4 inch logo (I believe... I'm going from memory). It's not really all that ugly, I just don't like the color combo, and I prefer understated (not flashy) stuff. I have a Toshiba DVD player in my puter that's the same as my Teac... no silk screen at all. I love it.

I have Plextors and they are good but if you go to any of the burner boards then do not talk to nicley of the new Plextor burners. The Plextors drives can not do Safe Disk 2 like the Acer and some of the other drives. I would not just buy a CDRW now because it says Plextor on it.

how so? it's still in stock and the rebate and coupon are still valid.

actually the deal has gotten a teenie bit better as it's now $162, - 15, - 20 = 126 + shipping

re plextor vs others- thanks for the input about SD2, I should have mentioned it.

I have an old plextor 1210 (this model). I'm happy with it. For my first burner, I'd probably go the same route again even if it's a little more $ than some of the other deals out there. For 2 reasons: 1) I can get a lot of help on the boards and 2) plextor is widely supported in 3d party software, while some other ones aren't.

As an experienced user now, I'd prob go with the $90 1610 one this week at BB for myself. BUt if I had to recommend something to a family member or friend who didn't want to be fvsking with their PC all the time, I'd go with the plex. It's steady like a rock. (is that the right phrase?).

I didn't think this was the hottest deal, but for those people who want something like this, I thought it might be a heads up.

😀

Thanks again stingygrrl.

The 15 off expired 5/31, it's still a good deal though.

Also available from newegg for $147 with free shipping (bare drive).

Does your 1210 do SD2?

Well the plextors can kinda do SD2, but it will only work in the same cdrw and not in regular cdrom drives. Other than that, it's a kickass drive and has never coastered on me on over 300 burns. BTW I have the Iomega 12x flashed to plextor.

I have a plextor and i love it. It's a very nice burner. I would get another one from buy.com but they charge tax and my experiences with rebates have not been kind.
