LIMA, Peru - A Peruvian airliner carrying 100 people crashed Tuesday near a jungle town while attempting an emergency landing in a storm, killing at least 41 people. The pilot tried to land in a marsh, but the impact split the aircraft in two, a regional official said.

At least 56 people from TANS Peru Flight 204 were being treated at hospitals, and it was not clear whether anyone had escaped injury in the crash, the latest of several major airline accidents around the world this month.

The Boeing 737 went down near the Pucallpa municipal airport after the pilot radioed that he could not land because of strong winds and torrential rains, airport receptionist Norma Pasquel told The Associated Press by phone.

You know they say planes are safe but I really think airlines just try to pump that propaganda onto people. Seriously if their were as many cars as planes I would like to see the death statistics.

Planes are safe but let's face it.

If the mofo is going down you're going to die. Might as well make the best of it.

4 in Aug. Very bad year for General Aviation.

Methinks I'll stay home for a while. :)

If I part of a plane crash I'd like to join the mile high club right before I leave.

Of course it'd be the half mile club by the time I react.

Heh, I was in an unofficial emergency landing on American Airlines in July on the approach to DFW. Unofficial because they didnt tell us we were being diverted and because the airlines wont say it was an emergency landing but I know it was because an airliner shouldnt normally maneuver the way it did. Pretty scary in retrospect.
