I am checking out this tutorial on overlay inset. It asks you to:

"Create the text using black color as foreground with a white background. This black text and white background appears in one layer not twp separated layers. "

I can't seem to do that. I create a new file and select background color as contents. So, my new window opens up with a whit background. Using the Text tool, I add a letter in black. At this point, there are two layers.

How do I do this with just one layer?

simple.

if i understood the question correctly this is what you should do.

1) create your new image, with a white background

2) add your text (this will add a new layer, dont worry though)

3) after your text is in and background set, hold down CTRL and select the text layer. This will outline the text with a ------------------ all around.

4) seeing that your text outline is selected, click on the background layer to transfer the outline to that layer.

yo should still see the outline at this point, if not, you deselected it. Now fill in your outline will black, or an even easier way to do this is by using the FILL shortcut. (ie CONTROL+ backspace or ALT+backspace, depending ont he two colors presented at the bottom tool bare
