Another partition thread, 45GB this time

I just ordered a 45GB IBM Deskstar 75 GXP, it should be here in a few days. How's this for partitions? I'm not planning on putting Linux on this machine so I don't need any drives for that.

C:\ 5GB for Win2K (is that too much or not enough? Never used Win2k before.)

D:\ 5GB for Win98 and the few games that wont work with Win2K

E:\ 35GB for everything else, games, apps, mp3, etc.

Looks okay, could trim some off your Win98 and put it in Apps, don't think you need such a big partition for that one.

*EDIT* Is it because you have to install Win98 first and then make a NFTS partition for Win2K?

Yes it looks good.

C: win98
D: win2k
E: the rest.

And dont let anyone tell you to use 1 big partition.

After both your oses are done, you can ghost both C: & D: to e: and this way you have an easy way to recover if 1 os decides to go crazy & mess up.

I know what you mean by the OS going crazy. It happened to me during a LAN party. Watching everyone else play CS while you're formatting and installing Windows isn't fun. 🙁 But at least I didn't lose any data though.

Don't worry about the 1GB partition. If that's all the space you can afford for the OS then you need a bigger hard drive!
 
AFAIK W98 needs to be on a primary partition, W2K does not. Your 1st partition will likely be a primary.

I would make everything FAT32 - no NTFS for W2K.. if you don't need the added security of NTFS. Having sll FAT32 will make it easier to swap files back & forth.

I even like to make a small (~4GB) partition at the very end .. to put everything that I know won't be accessed during normal opertion .. Ghost images, back-up files, etc. .. but this is merely personal preference.
 
Will Win2K still be as stable with FAT32 instead of NFTS? I heard from a friend that it needed NFTS to be the most stable. I'm planning to use Win2K almost all the time. I'm only going to use Win98 when I have to.
 
Win98 does not have to be on the first partition. I currently have it on a 3rd partition with win2k on the primary.

The file system does not affect OS stability. If you don't need the features of NTFS, stick with FAT32.
 
I'm not sure what exactly an extended/logical drive/partition is. 😱 Right now I've got Win98 on C:\ and everything else on D:\.


What are some of the features that NFTS offers? I'd like to have Win2K on the primary partition just cause I'll be using it more than '98.

 
Extended basically means all of your non-primary partitions. Say if you divide your 45GB into three partitions, the first will be primary, the other two will be considered extended, each of them is a logical under the extended.
